Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

Thanks for the reply, I checked again this morning by open device manager, then watching what happens when I plug in and unplug the LS5000 in the a usb socket this is what is happening:
1) device manager does not show a catagory for "printers and other devices", nor "scanners" but a new catagory called "portable devices"and under portable devices are these two new E and F drives, plus in "disk drives" it shows a 5in1 device plus another usb device.
2) when I unplug the LS5000, the two discs in "disk drives" drop and the catagory "portable devices" dissappears.
3) When I first plugged in the Ls5000, I did get a question mark "stating unknown device" but before I could do anything win7 decides to load drivers and says your "new device is ready to use".
4)Another thing I did was to load a transparency slide in the LS5000 to see if it trips something in win7 but no change....hope this make sense now

Thanks

I mean no offense when I say this but I'm having a hard time understanding what you're saying. Would it be possible to break your sentences up into paragraphs so they are easier to read and understand?

Just trying to get a better understanding of what's going on.

I would also be helpful if you posted a screenshot of your Device Manager with the scanner plugged in.

See this post on how to post on posting screen shots - A Preferred Method of Uploading/Posting Screen Shots

Thanks.

Canaryfalls,
FWIW
I run win7 64bit. and my coolscan shows up under 'Imaging Devices' under Device Manager. Maybe you can delete the driver Win 7 put in and install the 'fixed' driver manually.

Sygnus,
I bought a new HD and will try a fresh install of Win 7,I think there is a conflict with twain drivers from other programs that is blocking Nikon Scan from opening.

Windows doesn't install any driver for the scanner! That's the initial reason for my fix.

If you read his post closely he's pointing to a "drive" that has a drive letter assigned to it. The Nikon Scanner will never get a drive letter assigned to it because it's not a drive ie storage device. A screen shot of his device manager would immensely help clear this up.

Back to your issue. What other imaging devices do you have installed that use "twain" drivers??? Just curious.

My Epson Perfection Scanner uses twain drivers but it doesn't affect the Nikon Scanner which doesn't use them.

Thanks.

Sygnus,
I saw that my printer, an old Dell A920, has a scan driver installed, also I see that Photoshop Elements 9 has a Twain driver, as well.
I have been having a hell of a time with PSE 9, namely the Organiser. I wouldn't be suprised if that was causing my woes. That software is really poorly constructed, uninstalled earlier versions leave all sorts of junk lying in the background. So, I hope to do a clean install with a brand new SSD from Newegg. I'll put Nikon Scan on first, without any other programs and see if it's a go....

Yes, when you plug in the right device you have a better chance of it working. I have been using vuescan for years and I prefer it to nikon scan, although now I can use both programs.....many thanks

Yup, got my nice new SSD. It installed smoothly and seems to be running well. - I'm a little lazy when it comes to benchmarking my stuff--I'm just happy it works when I install it.

I did finally figure out why Nikon Scan would hang up/be non responsive:
It was a Windows Update of a Dell Printer Driver (model A920, to be exact). It seems there was a conflict in this driver that corrupted Nikon Scan. Luckily, I found the right driver on the Dell website and it now seems to be playing well with Nikon Scan.
It was a bit of a PITA to go through all this just to get my scanner running on Win 7 64 bit. But, I did learn the value of a clean install, and I probably will do the same whenever I migrate to a new OS. Using transfer programs seems to invite problems down the road.

Hi Cygnus 21. My 9000 scanner now works with windows 7 but I cannot get it to accept a twain source. It will only use a temporary folder and when I try to save a large file I get a message that the temporary file is full. Can you help me or send me in the right direction to get help with this problem? Thanks!
