Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

Thanks for the thought, Sygnus, but I think that for some reason the Nikon Scan software never installed. The path on my C: is different from yours, so the problem is there...

your path C:\Program Files (86)\Nikon\NkScan4\

mine C:\Program Files (86)\Common Files\Nikon\Driver

I don't have a Nikon folder under Program Files (86)--I have to go into Common Files to find the Nikon Folder, and then, in that Nikon Folder there is a Driver file but no NkScan4. I don't know why this is the case, but it explains why your fix for the driver works like a charm and also(possibly) why I can't open the Scan 4 software.

Oddly, in my programs menu, I have a link to Scan 4, which will not open, and a link to the Scan 4 Read Me file, which does open. Hmm.

So I uninstalled Nikon Scan, rebooted, then reinstalled Nikon 4.0.3 from the Nikon site, installed, rebooted. Still no Nikon Scan software, but your driver fix is still fine. Scanner is plugged in and recognized by the system, but no software to do any work.

Where have I screwed up? What is preventing the Scan software from installing?

thanks for any additional advice!

Like I said earlier, reinstall the software.

And you should have this folder (C:\Program Files (86)\Common Files\Nikon\Driver) in the common files. I have that one as well.

The fact that you don't have C:\Program Files (86)\Nikon\NkScan4 says the program got moved or deleted somehow. And I say that because you have the shortcuts, which wouldn't be there if the program never installed. Somehow it got deleted or moved. If it's not in C:\Program Files (86) than it's not installed. Period.

Again, reinstall the program and let me know if it works!

Yeah, you're are supposed to have that folder as well. I also have it.

Again, if you have nothing here - C:\Program Files (86)\Nikon\NkScan4, then that is the problem!!! Which is why the shortcuts aren't working - because the program itself is missing.

Have tried to reinstall multiple times. Nikon Scan software will not install. Something is preventing it, though your driver fix works. Thanks for your efforts with this.

I re-read the SteelChn thread, and someone else with the Coolscan 4000 had similar issues--driver fix works perfectly, but no Nikon Scan software. As per advice there, I tried free download of VueScan to test whether driver fix actually works. Success. Vuescan recognized the Coolscan straight away, preview and scan went perfectly. So yes, absolutely, the fix you offered here to update the driver for W7 works on the Coolscan 4000. Thanks.

One other suggestion in the thread was to do a clean install and then try again with the Scan 4.0.3 fix offered here. So am now wondering if I should just stick with the VueScan software, or do a clean install in the hope that the clean install will repair whatever prevents the NikonScan software from installing. I dread this, but would welcome your opinion. Maybe having the pain of a clean install now will prevent the pain of having to do it somewhere down the road.

Thanks for your help Sygnus, you've been over-the-top generous.

Thanks for the credit, but the fix provided by me and others has nothing to do with whether Vuescan works or not.

Vuescan works because it provide its own proprietary driver with its software. You didn't even need to try my fix and Vuescan still would have worked. So using Vuescan to test whether my fix worked it a false positive. Which, incidentally, is why I clearly state that you must remove Vuescan "prior" to trying this fix.

Before you get started: Remove Vuescan if installed! You can re-install it after these procedures if you choose.
At any rate I don't know why the Nikon Scan wouldn't install. Are you running Windows 7 x64? And did you get the scan software from the link I provided? Is it version 4.0.3 for Vista?

Something sounds strange because you have all the other install locations except the C: Program Files. That says that there was a partial install, and/or something got moved or deleted. Oh well.

As for Vuescan, I'm keenly aware of it and usually recommend it to those who can't get their scanners working. It's a nice program because it covers a whole range of scanners from various manufacturers. I personally prefer Nikon Scan over it mainly because of the Digital ICE in the Nikon Scan software. Never could understand or get use to Vuscan's solution.

Glad you got the scanner working though.

Somehow gave you the wrong impression so would like a chance to correct that.

So using Vuescan to test whether my fix worked it a false positive. Which, incidentally, is why I clearly state that you must remove Vuescan "prior" to trying this fix.

I did not have VueScan until I downloaded the trial version yesterday.

VueScan gives you an option to use just the software, or the software and a driver. You can select to use just the VueScan software at installation. I chose to trial just the software and declined the offer of the proprietary driver. So I used the driver fix posted here (and not the VueScan driver) with the VueScan scanning software.

At any rate I don't know why the Nikon Scan wouldn't install. Are you running Windows 7 x64? And did you get the scan software from the link I provided? Is it version 4.0.3 for Vista?

Yes, yes and yes. There is some problem still not identified that prevents this from installing or reinstalling. And though I am aware of VueScan's great reputation, would still prefer to use the NikonScan software if possible. I used it on mu old XP so I am used to it and I like it.

Just want you to know that I really appreciate your help, your time and your effort, with this.

I took no offense it what you said, and perhaps I may have misunderstood what you were saying in giving me credit. I just wanted you to understand how Vuescan works and it appears you do.

As for the install issue with Nikon Scan, I have no idea why it isn't "fully" installing. I would ask that you check one more place - C:\Program Files, instead of C:\Program Files (x86). May the Nikon Scan software installed there?

I wonder if anyone can help please?
I tried following the instructions but my Windows 7 64bit machine doesn't seem to want to install the driver (I have a Nikon Coolscan IV) - it comes up with error "Windows could not find driver software for your device" after I've pointed it to the folder with the scanners.inf and the NKScnUSD.dll

I note, however, in the device manager that it is coming up as simply "LS-40 ED" could it be that that name isn't recognised?

Hope you can help..

Sygnus21

First, thanks for help posts and help.

I followed your directions carefully
(http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64.html).

It still won't find the driver. My C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\NkScan4\Nikon Files folder has the NKScnUSD.DLL and your scanners.inf, version:

;========================= Begin of scanners.inf ===============================
; scanners.inf — Windows Still Image Setup File
; Based on Unoffical Vista X64 driver of LS-8000ED/9000ED for Nikon Scan 4.03 - Photo.net Digital Darkroom Forum by Steel Chn
; LS-4000 added by Bob Johnson, Earthbound Light
[Version]

Provider=%Provider%
DriverVer=1/1/2009,1.0
[Manufacturer]
%Mfg%=Models,ntamd64

When I do the Update Driver Software on the LS-5000 ED and point it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\NkScan4\Nikon Files (even just the (x86) folder up top) -- with subfolders checked, I still get "Windows could not find driver softwarwe..."

Did you say USB 5000 had a fix to the INF?

Thanks for your help.

If you download the inf i provide, yes the 5000 is included. You need to download the file from me, the file you downloaded from photonet does not have the 5000 included.

Read step #2 of my tutorial...

2- Then go my website and download this zip file - scanners.zip (includes 5000 fix)

Does the "Nikon Files" folder also include the "NKScnUSD.DLL" ? And are you pointing to that folder when looking for the driver?

PS - Make sure the scanner is powered up and connected before looking for the driver.

Unfortunately the instructions are only for the Nikon Coolscan 4000, 5000, 8000, and 9000 series. The older lV & V coolscans aren't supported here.

Sorry.

You can follow the suggestions in this post if you like but I can't guarantee it'll work - http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/44994-getting-your-nikon-coolscan-work-w7-x64-2.html#post570789

Good luck

Hi - Thankyou for the pointer; I used your scanners.inf and simply copied the line

from the [Models] section down to the [Models.ntamd64] section and it seems to have installed and appears to work fine (well from an initial play with it at least

So you simply moved it to the 64-bit section. Good, and happy to hear it worked for you.

And credit for the inf file belongs to Steel Chn and his post, which led me to compile things here and host the file on my website instead of having to create the file yourself, which was required per his instructions. I also added the the LS5000 to the file per a response to his post. Other than that, the inf file is his creation.

At any rate I'm glad my post here is helping a lot of folks with their Nikon Scanner(s).

Thanks
