Getting your Nikon Coolscan to work on W7 x64

Okay, I followed all the directions, but my computer can't find the scanner. It doesn't show up in the list.

I just wanted to add my thanks. I was a mite concerned, because I had installed my Nikon 4 software on a different drive rather than in the conventional C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\ folder, but I put your driver into the folder where I had the software, added the DLL filie from the Nikon download, and then browsed for the driver as per your instructions.

And, just like you said, my Nikon Scan software is now fully functional, and my 5000ED works like it used to before I upgraded to 64-bit Win7.

Sygnus, sorry for the long delay in reporting back re the fix. It turns out that my motherboard had (has) some kind of a problem that prevented the Firewire connection from working properly. I recently found time to fit a card and plugged it in to find that Win 7 reported it immediately and correctly as a Nikon LS-4000 ED IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device. Imagine my surprise....

I installed Nikon Scan but despite using your instructions and "scanners.inf" file it refuses to see the scanner even though it's sitting there in devices and printers and showing no warnings of any kind. On the basis that the driver might be from a previous installation of Vuescan I tried updating the driver but Windows wasn't having any.

At this point I gave up and installed Vuescan which works perfectly. Many thanks for your help and patience which I see has paid off for a lot of people here.

Sorry to hear you MB had issues. If you've got it fixed and haven't done so lately, re-download the file now. I discovered a while back that the old (now replaced) file had an error which prevented the 5000 from working or being seen. I've since corrected the situation and replaced the file. It's been reported since then that there are no issues with the fix and the 5000.

Many thanks for your infinite patience in responding to the various problems we have encountered in following your instructions. I hope you can endure one more, perhaps numbskull, question. I have been following your instructions quite literally:


1- Go to Nikon’s website and download the Nikon Scan 4.0.3 drivers for Windows Vista 32-bit. Yes, Vista
32-bit.

I assume this means to simply download and SAVE (NOT RUN) the file "ns403en_vista.exe".

2- Then download this zip file: scanners.zip from here.
3- Extract and save the scanners.inf file to a location or folder of your choosing...
Example: I created a folder called "Nikon Files" and placed that folder inside the "NKScan4" folder
located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\NkScan4 - Thus the NKScan4 folder now contains the Nikon
Files folder and looks like this...
C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\NkScan4\Nikon Files

This is where I get confused. At this point in the sequence I do not (yet) have a folder structure \Nikon\NkScan4 under C:\Program Files (x86)\. I assume (I have not yet tried) that this folder will be created when I install the Nikon Scan software (i.e. run the "ns403en_vista.exe" file) as you instruct in STEP 4. So I have created a folder "Nikon Files" just as you have instructed, but I cannot continue with the sequence of instructions as specified in the Example.

Am I taking this too literally? Please help.

Yes, you'll need to install the software (Nikon Scan) first. This will then create the folder structure - C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\NkScan4

After you've installed the scan software and the folder structure is created, take the "Nikon Files" folder you created and place it inside the "NKScan4" folder. Thus your new folder structure should look like this...

C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon\NkScan4\Nikon Files

Please note - If you're running a 32-bit version of Windows 7, the folder structure will be - C:\Program Files\Nikon\NkScan4 instead. Other than that everything else still applies.

If you already done that (which is what step #4 is saying) then you should have a Nikon Scan icon on your desktop, a folder in your "All Programs" list called Nikon Scan 4 as well as the folder in this path - C:\Program Files (x86)\Nikon

I was only concerned that, after saving and running the Nikon Scan 4.0.3 drivers file ("ns403en_vista.exe") at Step 1, that there was another separate action required to complete the installation of the Nikon Scan software, as stated in Step 4.

4- Now install the Nikon Scan software you downloaded...

As I understand it now, this part of step 4 is already accomplished and I only need to proceed to the remainder of the instructions under step 4. viz:

(x86)\Common Files\Nikon\Driver\Scan1394 and copy this file NKScnUSD.dll to the same folder​

(Example: Nikon Files) that the scanners.inf file is in.

i followed your directions to setup my Coolscan 9000 (Firewire) and indeed the system lists it now as a firewire device with the appropriate name.

i also can start the Nikon scan software but as soon as the application opens it freezes. looking in my taskmanager it says "program not responding".

i thus have managed to install the driver as per your suggestion, but now the Nikon software fails. i have tried various Windows Vista compatibility modes, all to no avail.

do you have any suggestion what makes the Nikon scansoftware freeze?
