good free movie editor programs with a TIME LINE?

still use windows movie 2.6 cuz it has a nifty timeline. the windows essentials does not have a timeline and is less useful. but windows movie 2.6 is obsolete in using latest file types and interacting with phones. so any good freeware that has a timeline and is compatible with the latest file types? just something simple will do.

Every time I tried to use anything from M$ on my Win 7 rig, it just sat there and did absolutely nothing. XP's Movie Maker worked beautifully, so this looks promising. Thanks, Callender!
