Sorry, that's all I had. Maybe someone else can come along and help you figure it out.

It might help to post your .bat file as well to see if someone can see an anomaly.

Have a look at Group Policy Search. The site maintains a mapping of policies to their registry settings. (Note the menu along the top of the site allows for different views and filters to help search for policies)

Certainly not as easy as a nice gpedit User Interface... but can still be helpful. If you use it, suggest you implement policy via a very well commented .reg file.

And, of course, all the usual warnings about proceeding carefully and at your own risk... yada yada yada

It's probably not going to work

Hi,

I have gpedit.msc on Windows 7 HP and some but not all features are available. If you try to use it to enforce SRP's you could end up with a machine that won't boot into windows. That's what happened on my machine when I tried. I've always got backups so no big deal!

I can view, create and edit SRP's including blocking software from running by file name, path, hash, certificate etc. The problem is that none of this is enforced by windows.

That fix to add Group Policy Editor works but it won't install secpol.msc which I believe is needed to enforce SRP's.

Take a look here for more info:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/7357-local-security-policy-editor-open.html

If you find a way to get a working secpol.msc please post the info needed to make it work.

A couple of things to look at:

How to make a disallowed-by-default Software Restriction Policy - outlines how to use parental controls to block software in lower versions of Windows 7 and further down the page explains how to plug the gaps and reconfigure when needed.

Depending on what you want to achieve Microsoft has provided tools for some alterations to be made that can only normally be accessed via gpedit try searching here, I'm aware its not the question you are asking but it may help.

You may find the solution to your problem, I turned off gadgets using this site.

Ok since their really is no solution other than do it manually in the reg, let me REPHRASE the question,, how does one create a standard user account in windows 7 home premium 64bit and disallow the standard user from installing software?

Standard users cannot install software or change system settings. That is the way it is right out of the box. That is one of the reasons why standard user accounts were created.

Are you certain they are using the standard account they were assigned or an admin account they might have gained access to?

A standard account does not have the capability to install software. Not unless some vary serious changes have been made to system security. And such could only be made with an admin account.

As I understand it (and the way I have it set up) if the Admin account has a password assigned to it, then in order for a standard user account to install anything they need the admin password. If the Admin account has no password then I think it just has a pop up asking for you to click to allow.

I have an admin account, password protected.. but for everyday use I have a standard account, if I try to install anything it asks for the admin account password.

Though like you say, I have seen it able to install say browser (user specific) add ones without asking.

Seems like your only real option is a registry setting

try looking at the group policy settings Download Group Policy Settings Reference for Windows and Windows Server from Official Microsoft Download Center

Good luck
