I bought a 1TB drive the other day and installed it in my box. I tried it in my hotswap bay and nothing came up (i might need a driver, never used hotswap before). Then I put it IN my box (sata) and nothing came up either. I googled it and was told to look in disk manager and see what the problem is. But the drive isnt even there!
Any help would be perfect. I'm running out of room!
Thanks :)

btw, I tried the HDD in my Ubuntu box and it worked fine..

I would start by going into the bios and making sure all unused sata ports are set to "Auto". But does it spin up when you power on? Can you see it in the bios? Also what mode is the controller set to in the bios? ide, ahci, raid?

It isn't in any mode (I guess this means the default one, as none of the pins are connected). Should it be in some other mode? All sata ports are set to auto and are working and the drive does show up in BIOS.

Do you have a driver for that disk?

I thought I did, but I just looked in my device manager and the drive shows up. Looking at the properties tells me there are no drivers installed for the device. Its in the HotSwap bay....I don't know if that has anything to do with it. Aren't the drivers automatically downloaded?

Some are automatic, some are not. Look at the manufacturers website for a Win7 driver - maybe even a Vista driver will do.

Are there any jumpers set? See bottom of this page.

Nope, there are no jumpers set on the drive. Should there be?

So any other ideas? I'm guessing its a driver thing but there are none on the WD website.

There should be no extra driver required unless it is for RAID or ACHI and Windows 7 has a fairly complete set on its DVD. Have you tried uninstalling the drive in the device manager and rebooting?

It actually does show up in the device manager, just says there isnt a driver to work with. It works under ubuntu though....would there be a way (this is a long shot) to run my VMware with an ubuntu live image and access the drive from there?

Ah, if it shows up in Device Manager it should also show in Disk Management. There you go into the left pane of the drive (where it says Drive 0, 1, etc.), right click and do an Initialize. After that you can right click in the right pane and quick format it and assign a drive letter.
