Solved hard drive w/ usb adapter- drive shows in disk manager, not computer

I am trying to access files on a hard drive from a different computer which will no longer load the OS. I have connected the hard drive using a usb adapter. When I plug it in, I get a notice that the device is ready to use, but it does not show up in Computer.

It is visible in the disk manager. There is no drive letter assigned and the options to do so are grayed out. Most of the options in device manager are grayed out, except for 'delete volume' and 'help'.

Hi, sorry, I should have replied sooner.

I gave up on windows 7 and the usb adapter. I put the affected hard drive back in the computer and transferred my files to a flash drive using an ubuntu live cd.

Hi, I'm new to this site. I have the same problem. My Acer Aspire 5720 OS Vista 32bit has a corrupt volume on disk. It won't boot normally or with any of the other options e.g. safe mode. I burnt a copy of Ubuntu live CD which boots up in the CD drive and although I can see the partitions on the corrupt hard drive there are no files showing.

I've put the drive in an external box and attached it to a computer running vista and one running XP, the device shows ready to use on both computers, but it does not show up in my computer.
