Solved Harddisk appears as local disk

Bill just out of pure curiosity I took a look at my own device management and I am wondering what is in stoleaways machine as it states it is a Ricoh based feature and I haven't noticed Ricoh around for a long time. Plus the card reader seems to be a in a totally different locale.

I am probably barking at the wrong dog and please tell me to take a running jump if.... but I was wondering what was in the disk drives in stoleaways machine indicate

John,

Wordsworth's post was on the same track - a mfr uses different components for similar devices. So we'll just have to take one step at a time. The card reader is not the issue, it might cause me to ask questions or take action to move it out of the equation. Without physical access to a machine, it's difficult to get all of the information needed at one point in time.

anyway.... you're fine and thanks for posting your DevMgr. I think i asked stoleaway to look in DevMgr and post what it says re: Ricoh.... no? Maybe that was another thread.
....I am wondering what is in stoleaway's machine as it states it is a Ricoh based feature ..... Plus the card reader seems to be a in a totally different locale.

..... but I was wondering what was in the disk drives in stoleaway's machine indicate
Ok, since there is a DevMgr from stoleaway and it isn't clearing up the Ricoh question. Let's get the big picture.

stoleaway: Please run a new Speccy report. I discovered that you can publish the report (file menu) instead of saving it and Speccy will strip out sensitive info (product keys) for you before it posts on the Piriform server. You'll get a URL that you can post here.

Thanks all

Bill

Are there any devices attached when you posted that DevMgr?
F:\ is configured as a portable device and that was the drive letter assigned to the Seagate drive (stoleaway, please confirm - I might be confusing the Seagate and WD drives)
WPD FileSystem Volume Driver shows an error.

After a little research it appears as though the problem with the WPD Filesystem volume Driver might be a consequence of following the Generic USB solution. Not to worry, the solution for that seems straight forward, although there might be a few steps to take.

Let's leave that on the back burner for now.

stoleaway: It looks as though the Apple iPod and F:\ are grayed out (not present). I would have expected the Generic USB solution to have cleaned that up, but I'll review the tutorial - it might have been USB-centric and therefor we missed the other devices that were not present.

Or.... you could just go into DevMgr and click View -> Show hidden devices
expand all of the categories, except Non plug-and-play and post what you see (it will take a few screen captures).
I might be able to see this in the Speccy report, so do that first.... it's easier.

I want to leave the iPod alone for now - not sure what removing it would require if you want to use it in the future. It might be as simple as plugging it back in..... but let's wait on the iPod too.

The F:\ device is wherer I'm going to place my focus.

Guess we'll have to wait - the time difference is killing us - and the extra workload you picked up won't give you more time, will it ;)

Or am I just barking up the wrong tree again? :)

Darn John, now you have me thinking my machine needs attention.

So I plugged in a card and here's what my machine looks like (Computer & DevMgr)

The difference is only how the mfr builds a machine - did they use USB ports or IDE ports
edit: as far as IDE / ATA don't sweat the difference, there is none. IDE/ATA/PATA same thing. SATA is the newest and is different - you cannot connect a SATA device to a IDE/ATA/PATA port and visa versa.
I recall there is an update that changed the "ID" of my controllers from ATA to IDE, can't recall which one or why mine are IDE now. It's just a name change.

Just for reference when you get to it since stoweaway's card reader appears to be installed to an internal USB header as mine is, rather than IDE. In My Computer and Disk Management it shows as Removable Disks, and in Device Manager, as Slartybart said, under Portable Devices rather than under IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

Ok, now we can focus on the the Seagate issue again. Sorry about that, we sidetracked into a discussion re: Ricoh while you were working OT. All of the recent post on Ricoh are just techies talking about something we'll need to look at on your system. Remember we got rid of H: (your Ricoh) quite a while ago. Folks are just comparing notes.

Activating Windows - Bring up the activation screen again and click on "Other ways to activate...." - there should be a regional telephone number presented. Because your hardware has changed (probably the Ricoh card reader) you'll have to call to acivate. Just let them know that you've been trouble shooting the ext HD issue and as a result, your hardware changed. They'll give you a long number - write it down - that you'll enter to replace your key. I had to do this recently and it's no big deal, just an inconvenience that you have to call. Ask them what number you should use if you have to reinstall in the future. I'm not sure if either will work going forward, because your hardware will once again change when we "fix" Ricoh. That means that you might have to make another call and explain it again. In reality, MS was very co-operative and gave me the new key for my system without any discussion - they checked their database and found no licensing violations and gave me the new key.

Please activate windows as soon as possible - you have 30 days after the install to do it before Windows goes into "limited function" mode.

yup, the seagate harddisk is the F drive.

How come you posted the SFC output? Did I ask for that - I'm not sure.

I'm going to have to recap this thread - for my benefit.

Short recap:
Post 100 - did you get a chance to toggle the properties on the Seagate drive, did it make a difference?

Post 105 - I'd like to see the expanded DevMgr screenshot(s). Since were looking for ghost devices and you'll expand all but the Non plug-and-play, it's going to take a few captures to show all devices. I don't think a Speccy report shows hidden devices, but I'd still like to see a fresh report. Use the publish option on Speccy's file menu and post the URL you're given. Speccy strips out stuff that shouldn't be published if you use publish and posts the output on the Piriform (maker of Speccy) server.

If you have a SD card, plug it into your card reader - Windows should load the drivers and assign a drive letter to it. If not, we might have to uninstall WPD in DevMgr and install the Ricoh drivers manually.

Again, I'm not worried about that now, but if inserting a card loads everything up, we can cut down on the Ricoh noise (chatter) in the thread. Plus this might allow you to activate Windows using the key on the COA sticker - if not, follow the "Phone activation" method.

Once I create a recap status from the beginning, I think we can determine the next step(s). I'll post it when I get through all of it and probably ask for confirmation on things that were suggested. Since SP1 and the Ricoh discussion sidetracked us and things might have been missed.

Anyway...... give me a day to do the recap - but please go ahead and provide the DevMgr screenshot(s) and Speccy Report.

Thanks

Bill

Well that's the whole story as of post 113. Now, I'll have to formulate a plan. It shouldn't be too complicated, but I do want to make sure we try before you declare the drive unusable.

There's all that data you want to preserve. At the very least, we need to see if a utility can grab the data and move it to your WD if you have enough free space. If you don't have enough free space on one drive, you might have to split up the data until the Seagate is in working order.

Soooo, there are a number of steps and the time difference will drag this out. How long is the drive under warranty? I don't want you to miss the end date.

At any rate, as you probably already know - I'm in this for the duration.

No problem, that's quite a lot of info - thanks.

This will take me some time - the exercise will be to uninstall the ghost devices. You don't want to just "kill" every ghost, but most of them should be moved out of the way to eliminate that as a cause.

If you want to start without me, just uninstall ghosts of the Seagate drive and see if there's any improvement (ie. does the drive work normally?) Of course once you plug in the drive and remove it, more ghosts will show up.

I'll post more in a bit.

I don't know if Norton presents a problem in your case or not, but sometimes Norton is too agressive.

So to eliminate Norton as a suspect, replace it with a lighter alternative.
  1. Uninstall Norton
  2. Download and run Norton cleanup
--> Choose your product from the list for specific instructions
  3. Download and Install Microsoft Security Essentials
Don't worry about checking if the Seagate drive works at this point, we'll test the drive numerous times. Plus I don't believe that simply uninstalling Norton would resolve the drive issue. I might be wrong, so if you want to try the drive - sure, why not.

If you decide later to re-install Norton - check the SwSetup folder
--> it might be a hidden folder, change folder options: organize button on explorer -> select the view tab -> click the radio button to show hidden files / folders
Note: Assumes that Norton came with your PC.

Still working through the DevMgr list.

I see your card reader shows up in DevMgr, how about in Computer? Just curious.

I've condensed your images to one with ghosts only. I want to review the Generic USB tut again before proceeding.

The ??? notation: Apple, WPD, and Shadow Copies

I don't know what DevMgr uninstalling Apple or iPod would do to music lists or other iPod configurations, so I'm hesitant to do anything with those

WPD - open up properties for that device and tell me what error are reported. I'm still leaning towards uninstalling, but would like more info from your machine

Shadow copies - I think these are restore points. Please tell me how you have System Protection configured. do you create restore points on all disks. And can you determine which one pertains to the Seagate drive? (properties might tell you). They could also be from windows Backup or mirroring software.

Can you tell me more about backup / mirroring on your system.

So, anything in the image marked with ??? - take no action, do not uninstall - it might make more work for you re: iPod and Restore Points or backups.

I need more info on the two Chipset USB controllers, so leave them alone too.

Let me read some more.

no, you should answer the other questions asked first.

I thought the hilight might confuse you, sorry. The only way to identify the ghost devices in thos sections was to hilight them - they were all the same name, so the order + hilight showed which ones were ghosts.

Hold off on the ghost entries for now, I'll get back on that.

While I read, please update me on Norton and questions on backup / system recovery.

Thanks,

Bill
