I have a new desktop computer running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit that came with Office 2010.

I have a 3-User package of Office 2007 that I purchased to put on a laptop, but never installed it. I am not a heavy user of Office.

Can I install Word 2007 "over" 2010 to avoid the learning curve?

Thanks, cb

Hi Abredt,

2007 and 2010 are very similar, especially in look-and-feel. I don't think you will notice any difference between the two, so recommend you stick with 2010.

Golden

Not much difference between the two versions.

If you want more of an Office 2003 feel, and as you posted you're not a heavy Office user, consider installing the latest version of Libre Office along side of your Office 2010.

You would need to uninstall 2010, but I wouldn't bother as it's far better than 2007.

A couple of hours to get to grips with it and you'll be fine.

Anyway, you could always make a bit of money by selling your 2007 version.

If your Office 2010 is a 3 month trial, it is worth considering to use the paid 2007 license. But you have to uninstall the 2010 version first. There were some problems uninstalling 2010 in the past. You may want to have a look at this thread in case you run into problems.

You " pre-installed " Office 2010 is a " trial " version. Only good for x numbers of days. ( Used to be 60 days).

I just recently bought a new computer with Win 7 Home Premium. It also came with a trial 2010 Office. I have a retail Home and Student 2007 . So, I uninstalled the trial version and then install my paid version.
Here is a link to uninstall your 2010 Office trial version.
The tutorial includes 2003, 2007 and 2010 versions. Make sure you choose the 2010 " FixIt " button for uninstall.
How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites if I cannot uninstall it from Control Panel?

Pardon me for contradicting you.
Microsoft Office never give away for free.
You said it came with the computer. It is a trial version.

To prove ....
Open one of the Office programs > look up at the top of the program window > do you see the word " Trial " ?

Hi there
sometimes Office is pre-installed with an OEM license -- so it is always worth checking first.

MS doesn't give away stuff I agree but remember since Windows is usually pre-installed (legally) then there is no reason why Office shouldn't be either. The License will already have been paid for - calculated in the price of the PC.

However in general BOTH these products will require activation on First use -- so if you can't see TRIAL anywhere on your version then just see if you are prompted for activatin.

You won't be prompted for a key if its a pre-installed OEM version -- the activation server will just check the OEM DB and activate if OK.

Non commercial use simply means this has been pre-installed on a Home / Private PC and isn't a normal retail license version that you will see in commercial environments such as corporate LAN's etc.

AFAIK there isn't a restriction on you for example taking home from work and creating documents on your PC with this version of office.

Cheers
jimbo

1) Office 2010 starter version comes preinstalled on OEM computers. This is NOT a trial version, its a FULL LICENSE version, however the starter edition has limited functionality- only word and excel are included (no powerpoint, access or outlook) and it is AD- SUPPORTED. The included word and excel are fine for the average user but if you need specialized features, you may be somewhat handicapped.

2) Office 2010 starter only comes preloaded on oem computers, its not available for sale in the market as a standalone product.

Now I remember it said 2010 Starter when I turned on my brand new computer.
I did not activate it and I did not bother to investigate. I just uninstalled it.

Thank you for correcting me.

Sorry. It is incorrect.
I bought my MS Office Home and Student 2007 in retail store. It came with a box and a product key.
It is not pre-installed on a computer.

Help!!!!Printing without having to open every doc in a fold.
Ok Long storey sort, had a computer problem, Dell sent me a new computer running windows 7 pro 64 bit.
It came with (non active) Microsoft Office 2010, so I went ahead and ran the install to try it out, the only thing stalled was XL & Word.
Then I installed and activated Microsoft Office 2007, and opened a word a doc, it opened in 2010, uninstalled Microsoft Office 2010.
Now everything is ok, except Microsoft Office Word 2007.
# 1 fixed the 15 file limit on folder option for printing.
#2 when I right click on desk top, go to new, there was no option for Microsoft Office Word document, went to registry fixed the menu short cut, but the icon is not correct.
#3 when I go to a fold that dose has word “DOCX” in it and right click I have no print option.
I have ran the Microsoft Office 2007 repair and diagnostics they all the way reports, repaired but fixes nothing.
#4 I install a software program (Print Conductor) that is to print everything in a folder,, except Microsoft Office Word 2007 DOCX, it is reporting that word is not installed, .
P.S had Microsoft Office 2007 perfectly on the other computer running windows 7 ultimate 64 bit.

Try starting from scratch.....

1. Make sure the MS Office 2010 Starter is truly uninstalled. Check your Programs and Features application.

2. Uninstall MS Office 2007 also.

3. RE-install MS Office 2007.

FYI

After having major problems buying computers with all the bells and whistles, I buy my computers from Costco online. If a problem, I can drive it to my local Costco within 90 days for a cash refund.

The Dells usually come with full versions of MS Office pre-installed with product keys supplied.
I bought some books on Office 2010 and will guts it out.

Thanks to all, cb

Don't go with 2010 - uninstall it and use a program you know

My experience with Office 2010 is fairly uniformly disastrous. With Word all sorts of odd thigs happen (sudden indentations when typing a paragraph, 'Ignore' when correcting does not ignore, et. - see my post on this site); and I have yet to understand what the purpose of the 'background' screen in Excel is (still less find a way to get rid of it, so that I don't inadvertently click the wrong icon to minimize or close) - as a statistician, I am fairly used to spreadsheets, but the 'trials and errors' I had in getting used to making the old keyboard shortcuts work (or finding out when they didn't), the difficulty in finding out how to do things with the blasted ribbon which were perfectly easy before - all these have left me thoroughly sickened with it.

My advice would be to cut your losses, if it genuinely is a trial version, and go back to what you know and can work with.

Best of luck, adj
