Having Problems...Just Installed 7

I have a Dell Studio 1535 and just installed Windows 7 x64 (had Vista x32). Each time I put a cd in to install a program, I have several problems. Here is the usual issue:

1. I take the last CD out and try putting the new one in. After it slides in, it pops back out each time I try it.

2. I try restarting and it freezes at the "Shutting Down" screen, so I have to press and hold the power button to turn it off.

3. When I turn it back on, it will accept the CD and install the program. Afterwards, I try to eject the disc and nothing happens. I right click on the disk drive in "My Computer" and it freezes. I try to shut it down and it freezes at the "Logging Off" screen, so manual turn off is required again.

This issue only occurs when I mess with the CD drive. I have also gotten a blue screen during this.

Should I install drivers? If so which ones? Dell doesn't have any available for Windows 7 and it says the CD drive is functioning properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Get the model number of the optical drive, then go to the manufactureers website to check for Win7 drviers.
But to me it sounds like the drive is dead. I had similar issues with a DVD drive a couple of years ago, ripped it out, threw in a new one and the problem was fixed.

Edit: P.S. Welcome to the forums mate.

I have spent about 7 hours working on this now and can't find a solution. The MS troubleshooter has been "detecting" for some time now and nothing has happened. I have tried downloading all the drivers from Dell as well.

I don't believe it is my CD drive because it consistently works the first time each time I start it up and there were no problems prior to me installing Windows 7.

The only other thing I can think of is updating the BIOS (I currently have A03 and A06 is the latest). However, I've tried that a few times and when I execute the .exe file, I get this error during restart: "Error! The BIOS update could not be performed because a valid ROM image file could not be found."

The directions on Dell's site for updating the BIOS is just to double click the .exe file and let it go. Thanks again for the help!

Hi and welcome

Dont do the BIOS upgrade unless you absolutely have to. The dangers out way the possible help.

Try booting in safe mode and see if the problem still exists. If it does not something in the normal boot is conflicting with it.

Let us know and we can walk you through it

Same thing occurs in safe mode, first disc works fine but second one freezes the drive and prevents normal shutdown.

I was trying to do the BIOS because one of them says it fixes a CD eject problem (not sure if it's the same problems).

It's situations like this that you need the cliche token "geek" friend, lol.
Ok, basic elimination. Remove the drive, run windows etc. use a driver cleaning tool, many links can be found in the forums. Check the actual firmware of your drive, there may be an update for it.
As for your BIOS update A05
"Fixed CD-Eject abnormally in Vista64 with 4G RAM"
The BIOS version A06 may be what you need:
"
Fixes/Enhancements
------------------
1. Added enhancement for Wifi catcher function.
2. Added enhancement for Embedded controller. "

Thouroughly read the BIOS update procedure before doing it.
Good luck with it mate.
