Dual Radeon 5970 launches on the 18th


ATI / AMD has finalized the Radeon HD 5970 spec. First and foremost, the card is scheduled to launch on the 18th, or this coming Wednesday and it will without a doubt be the fastest card for this Christmas.

It has two RV870 GPUs clocked at 725MHz, which is some 125MHz less than on the single GPU Radeon HD 5870, but both chips have kept 1600 shaders. This means that Radeon HD 5970 has 3200 shaders and comes with 2GB GDDR5 memory.

Maximum Board Power is 294W and the total GPU compute...

this card is expected to launch @ $600 (no doubt £400 in the UK) ..... Nvidia are gonna miss the boat this time around im afraid....they're gonna loose a bunch of customers....

Of course, if it's anything like the currently supply of ATI high-end video cards...you aren't going to be able to find one of these cards for about 6 months.

Anybody here having any luck finding the 5850's or the 5870's??????

For that type of money ATI better make sure their drivers are in order, especially the crossfire part.

At any rate i'm sure it's a nice card, but i'll hold on to my trusty 4890 and wait for round two.

Yeah, I ordered one just before it came out (Sapphire 5850), when it was cheaper too! Since then they have gone pre-order only and £30 more expensive!

It was quite an upgrade from my Radeon X850 XT..

Yeah, and it's great that I don't "need" one....I've currently got an Nvidia 9800GTX+...so that's handling my current needs quite well.

As an aside, you don't really need this type of power just to enable higher levels of AA/AF. A 5850 is enough for any modern game, Crysis at 1080p, as always, an exception with very high settings. This is getting to the point where the GPU will weigh more than the case.

All I know is a 12+in card won't fit in my case. My GTX260 has 3/8in clearance from my hard drive cage. So it would not only be just the card cost but also new case for me.$$$$

Probably not...but when the new benchmark tool comes out and a nerd finds that they are no longer #1....they just gotta upgrade for the sake of upgrading.

That's one thing that I love about forums such as these. Although I am a systems admin for a living, and feel that I spend way too much time and money on my home computers, I find that so many others here have put me to such shame that I realize that I don't really have a problem. I'm actually rather frugal, much to my surprise (even though I have an SSD drive in my quad core desktop)

E-peen is a powerful force

Personally, the day I can get a solid 60fps @ max settings with little to no framerate drop, is the day I'll be content.

I really only ever bench at my 24/7 settings to compare changes or test new drivers etc.

Benching for the sake of benching doesn't interest me. It's similar to those who modify cars just to brag about a few extra BHP.
