Here's my situation.

Recently my hdd would stop windows boot up and give me an error code and there was no fix you unless reformat it. So I went ahead and pulled the harddrive out and got an eSATA usb adapter and plugged it in to another computer. Problem is power wasn't being pulled (through the wall obviously) and I couldn't get the hdd running for the computer to recognize it. I tried another hdd to test the cable and it worked fine.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get my data back. I don't want to spend a fortune.

Hi fenix9158,

Welcome to SevenForums.

Can you please clarify

1. Which is "your HDD"? If it is an external HDD the make and model and also how it was connected to the PC, esata/usb ? ( I have atleast five or six HDDs, two inside my PC, the rest externals outside and all are "my HDDs" ;))

2. If it was preventing Windows from booting, how did you get the error message that it needs to be formatted?

3. Is your ASUS PC/Desktop fully functional?

In order to get any data back, the drive is going to have to at least spin up -- and you said when you connected it to another PC, it would not do that.

If you can get it to spin up when connected to the other PC, are you then interested in recovering files? OR do you want to recover the entire drive?

Sorry shhould have included this in my first post. Its an internal hdd, off an Asus laptop. It begins to load up windows and cannot complete and gives me the error.

I'm only interested in recovering certain files not the whole thing. Not sure how I would proceed to spin up the hdd.

Please put the HDD back where it was :), start your ASUS laptop, write down the exact error message you get and let us know. Also note down the make and model of the HDD and post.

( In a problem of this sort where a PC/laptop refuses to boot, the first effort should always be to repair/recover in-situ. By taking the HDD out and doing all sorts of jugglery, you may only worsen what could have been otherwise easily tackled and/or diagnosed.)
