Hi all,

A few days ago I experienced some power failure and now my HDD (WD Caviar Black 640 Gb 64mb 7200 SATA 2) is dying.
Crystal Disk Info shows a warning: Current Pending Sector Count with RAW value 1

Everything works fine except when I start Opera. The more tabs I open and the more cache it creates, the more errors show up in Event Viewer. I'll post the error later since I forgot to take a look now and I am trying to clone the disk again.

I am using Paragon Disk Manager and it seams to be having problems cloning the disk. I tried to clone it using a USB rack and it failed. I tried to clone it via SATA, using Clone Disk option, no luck. I also tried to clone it using Migrate OS function. Everytime it clones all other partitions except C:\.
Now I am trying to clone it using RAW Disk option. Since this is low level cloning I hope it works. (just failed)

Anyway, here are my questions:
1. What exactly does Current Pending Sector Count mean? As far as I know this means that the disk can't relocate bad sectors. But does this mean that there is actually a bad sector that needs to be relocated or it's just a possibility?
2. Is there any way to get the disk to relocate the sector, so that I can clone it?
3. (and this one is just for confirmation) How reliable is this disk from now on?
4. Any good app (or way) to clone it, other than Paragon/Acronis?

That's all. I appreciate any help you can get me.

First of all make sure your defrag scheduling is off. defragging can spread the corruption.
Download the data lifeguard diagnostics tool from western digital. Run the short and long test and report back. I believe the dos version may fix bad sectors.
If that fails then perform a chkdsk /r on the disk

Free Macrium Reflect has a cloning tool and you can tell it to ignore bad sectors in the options. You should be able to do this with Acronis as well.

Thanks. I will do so when WD free Acronis stops. I decided to try it since someone on Ubuntu forum suggested that it the version provided by WD uses file by file copy method instead of sector by sector.
Defrag is Off. Also, I avoided disk check & DLG to prevent bricking the disk completely.

Sorry for the late reply. It took more than expected.

Acronis stumbled upon a bad sector and I clicked Ignore All.
Now it seams to have cloned the disk but I am a little worried that I don't know exactly how many bad sectors are out there, even if Disk Info reports only 1.

I removed the old drive and the new one booted up just fine.

However, is there any way to check what wasn't copied and/or wat was on the bad sector? Or to make a comparison between HDDs?

OK, it seams to be working, however there are a few errors showing up in Event Viewer:

Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004

/* HD5 seams to be a USB drive , no partitions (what is DR5 & DR6 btw) and the flash data error seams to be caused by the fact I removed the drive directly, without safe remove.

Also, I had to reactivate Windows. There are other errors, but nothing I haven't seen in the last 3 years like Windows Update service hab on start or certain application failed to load certain service.

Ideas? I haven't connected everything back so I don't know what will show up when I do.
And is it safe to resize the partitions with errors like this

and this

?

It doesn't seam they appear frequently (only 2/3 time so far) and didn't appear after restart.

It sounds promising.
At least run sfc /verifyonly in a command window. It will verify that windows components are not damaged.

"The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load"
this is a common problem with startup issue that probably has nothing to do with your disk issue.

Probably related to the above is

* HD5 seems to be a USB drive , no partitions (what is DR5 & DR6 btw) and the flash data error seams to be caused by the fact I removed the drive directly, without safe remove.

OK.

I managed to resize the partitions the way I wanted, do a full system defrag & cleanup and it seams to be working.

Most of the errors mentioned above after a system restart. However, this one is still there:

Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004
Source: VDS Basic Provider
ID: 1

I found this: VDS Basic Provider event ID 1 is logged on a Hyper-V guest operating system
It doesn't seam to be something serious but...

And now I also get this:
Encrypted volume check: Volume information on \\?\Volume{735533b4-91a9-11e2-83c1-001e8cc96001} cannot be read.
Source: BitLocker-Driver
ID: 24620

I had some serious issues in the past with the system and at some point, after Windows stopped assigning drive letters for external drives, I started getting this every time I connected an external HDD (never happens for USB drives).
Somehow, it disappeared.
It's kinda weird since I use Windows 7 Pro, that only has a BitLocker reader as far as I know, and none of my external drives are encrypted.

sfc /verifyonly returned this: "Windows Resources Protection found integrity violation".
Is there any way to get a simplified result? Or I should simply run /scannow?

Here is the CBS log file.

LE: After 2 /scannow in cmd it seams all problems are gone.

I have gotten both those - I don't think they are serious.

Glad to hear scannow could correct the issues. Not always the case.

I know. I was actually quite surprised about it, especially since it kept on saying there are errors. It took a /verifyonly & another /scannow to figure it out.

Thanks for your help.

BTW, do you have any idea what this is?
Code:
The description for Event ID 50 from source Ntfs cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table

Source: NTFS
ID: 50
Level: Warning
I never encountered something similar before.
