I'd probably enable it. It's an early detection system for predicting hard drive failure.

SMART enabled is a good idea. Many programs use SMART as well, to show HDD parameters. having it enabled will have no, or negligible effect on performance.

Yeah, you definitely want it enabled. It might mean the difference between having time to back up your data, versus just finding out that the drive died completely.
