Help crashes on every update

Windows 7 crashed on update. Nothing would fix it so I had to do a complete re-install of Windows. Now when I do the updates it crashes again and have to do repair over and over. What is going on here I do not know but I just want a clean re-installation so I can just start over without having to look over my shoulder thinking every move I make may cause it to crash again. I had backed up everything on an external HD but when I tried to use it the PC would not open it at all, no matter what I tried. I am a 70 year old novice here and just want my computer to work as it is suppose to. Any help I get here is really greatly appreciated. I sincerely mean that. THANKS

Then follow these same steps to get and keep a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7.

Be sure to read the Special Note for HP Owners at the end as you may be able to do a Minimal Recovery which is almost as good as a Clean Reinstall. If not it explains how to decide which partitions to keep and delete when you are doing the booted reinstall.

Now I am wondering how old that drive is because if this keeps happening it is suggesting to me that perhaps the platters or read write heads are faulty.

Now from one old fellow to another LOL!! do you have access to another machine to test that drive as there are two tests that spring to mind and can be done one to test the file system and one to test the physical status of the device.
Of course the better idea would be to install a new drive and these days even 1TB drive is cheap enough (out here $69).

There is also the possibility if an older machine of the RAM being a bit out of whack hence why we need those specs.

Well their is a lot of us older folks on this forum that just like computers.
I like ICit2lol idea of another hard drive.

Thanks guys for all of the help. I am like you, I think the drive is bad. Its only like 18 months old but even at that all indicators are it is the drive. Again thanks.

Well you only have to run some tests and two that I use are these one for the "filing" system and one that is a physical test on the platters and to some extent on the read / write heads.
