I am trying to sort out my daughters laptop dumping loads of rubbish cleaning disk and updating windows.
With the help of the experts on here I have managed to keep win 10 at bay by setting ask first and uncheck give me recommended the same and all that.

So I left my daughter to it knowing she could not do too much harm (she is 20 by the way).
So to the point - I find a new file on the desktop, named as such with 1.79GB data 17,1764 files and 940 folders. No one remembers putting it there. Can I delete it or what do I do with it.

2 attachments show some of the folders within the folder and what is inside one of the foldres

Hi OH YES YOU DID;)
Its Panto season.

Those files look like the W10 installers to me, thier dated 2014???

However the free W10 upgrade and the associated KB's have now been dropped,

Create a restore point then delete the files/folders.
If your system hits a problem then restore them, i dont expect you will.

Give it a couple of days to be on the safe side.

You can now reset windows updates to normal.

Also just thinking I was going to install the GWX remover kb3184143 but I looked and I have already kept away all the files associated with win 10 so didnt install the remover.
How can the be win 10 files, --- not saying they are not but I dont understand.

W10 was >>released<< 1/10/2014.
The OS was around prior to that in Beta mode.
You dont need the GWX control any more

I've never known an OS be saved to the desktop!

Use acronis thats BETTER than system restore any day of the week.

Related thread: Manual Win Update folder remnants - safe to delete?

Looks like leftovers from Windows Update where the installer unpacks the files before installing them. I'm not sure why they would be on your desktop though unless someone moved the folder(s) there.

Yes reading that other link that does sound like me as I did try to install update a few of months ago and then gave up. And yes the update is now working with the two fixer kb's. Such a big file though and I did not move it there and my daughter has been drilled to to no touch anything.
I am a little disappointed to hear that the laptop is a good one as I thought that it was all my skill that that keeping it going, sounds like it still going DESPITE my meddling.

I will go for a delete once I have done a backup with Acronis
