Help me in partitioning my hard drive :)

Hey Guys, I think I read in PC World that even after I use the whole space I can still shrink the partition and make one extended partition in which I can go with my idea of creating 3 logical partitions. Correct me if I am wrong dude. Also do tell me does the partitions created during Win7 installations are primary or Logical, if I create them?

PC World, they are mac specialist  . I stopped to subscribe it, now only digit and chip.
Obviously, there is is a shrink volume option in disk management, but it is a bit troublesome and risky. If you think you can manage it, that is you can shrink the volume to get the space of new partitions, then it is ok, you may go for it. But had I been in place of yours, I didnt have done it. its nothing but individual difference.
Using windows 7 dvd, I could not make the logical partitions. All they were primary :( . That is why I suggest the partition wizard live cd.

Yes, you'll need Partition Wizard bootable CD (a valuable tool) to create logical partitions.

To avoid the 100mb System Reserved partition (which will take up a Primary) at install, pre-partition using Partition Wizard.

Can you walk me through the partition wizard live cd ?

If you instal using Dells version of Windows, im fairly certain it will wipe any partitions you made and restore everything to the way it is now.

If you have your own copy of Windows, you can do a fresh install with whatever size/amount of partitions you want.

You may be able to shrink the volume once installed and make partitions inside Windows.

If you do not want to use 3rd party software, You can also create all the partititions and format them etc with diskpart. through cmd prompts at instal screen.

I am only partitioning to suit my needs and not Dell's.
There is so much bloatware with their systems and I really don't plan to use Recovery by Dell :p

Let it be started. Create partitions according to your own need, but please please get and burn the Free Download Partition Wizard. Otherwise it will be troublesome to create logical partitions. First, delete all existing partitions, to get 465 GB free, create a primary partition of 65 GB using windows installation dvd (automatically it wii be primary) take the rest unformatted. After installation, the rest will be partitioned using Free Download Partition Wizard.
So at first, start the download and burn it. It is an asset.
Edit : Download the bootable cd (38 MB).

Yes, if you want to create them all through disk part you can.
After creating the Os partition the command would look like:

create partition logical size=
assign letter=D (or whatever letter)

I find it a bit easier just to do the rest in Windows with Disk management, but you can do it this way

Partition Wizard Help ! ! !

Free Partition Wizard bootable CD has an easier interface for creating logical partitions and doing most anything else you need.

Free Download Partition Wizard

Greg, I went to the Partition Wizard page. Everthings now really seems easy except for 1 thing. Can you tell me what to Put in the PARTITION LABEL and Location space while using Partition Wizard? Can you just give me a walkthru? It will surely be great of you !
