You're welcome, my pleasure; you can make a zip of any file so you can experiment with it.

It is neither a zip drive nor a zip file - it is a zip folder. A zip folder is nothing but a suitcase or box with which you can send a number of files or folders, either upstream or attach to a mail. Think of it like a box that you mail to a relative containing all the Christmas presents rather than mailing each item individually.
Once you did a "send to Compressed (zipped) folder" as Bare Foot Kid has shown, you just drag all the other files/folders that you want to send into that zip folder. If you did another "send to...", you would get a new zip folder and each zip folder would only contain 1 item - and that is not what you want. For Skydrive, you want to fill it to up to 50MB to be most efficient.
The day you want to recover your files from Skydrive, you just download the zip folders and "extract all files" after you double clicked on the zip folder (see picture). Then you have your original files/folders back. Btw: you can put files AND folders into a zip folder and also mix them. As I said, a zip folder is just a box.

I believe I said that 50MBs is the maximum - at least for skydrive.

You might use 7zip instead as the compression ratio is a lot better.

I have been using SDExplorer for a couple of months now and find it very useful, i have all my music, photo's and other important stuff backed up to skydrive for when that horrible day comes. Its a brilliant program and long for the day that MS gives us something like this built into the OS, but this will do until then.

When you run the program you should get a list of your Skydrive folders, each folder has a different webdav address. To map a folder to a driveletter, right click Computer and choose "map network drive". Now copy the webdav address in SDS and paste it in the "folder" field and choose a drive letter for it. You have to do this for each of your Skydrive folders so each folder gets a different drive letter. Works like a charm for me but I would imagine that if you have a lot of folders in Skydrive it's not an ideal solution.

Are those actually virtual drive letters that get picked from the available drive letters in your system? Reason I ask is that I have already 8 drive letters used in my system and on Skydrive I have about 40 files. One would run out of letters in such a scenario.

Yes it is. It's not one drive letter for each file though, it's one for each Skydrive folder. Basically it works just like when you connect to a network share on a lan or a Windows domain.
