hi all, :)
i duel boot with kubuntu and win 7 both on there own disc
i want to upgrade windows 7 by using the upgrade disc, so do i need to uninstall kubuntu?, at the moment the grub2 is what i get when the pc boots up and gives me the choice of windows or kubuntu, do i uninstall kubuntu with the grub menu? so i can boot with windows 7 as normal? or can i keep kubuntu on the drive and just unplug it from the motherboard while i upgrade my windows ? then when windows is installed and up and running reconnect the kubuntu drive and repair the grub2 menu with using Super Grub2 Disk
Boot Problems Open Source Tools | Super Grub Disk, Super Grub2 Disk and Rescatux
so i need advice on how to do this if anyone can help please i think i no but just need some guidance here as i have never done this yet:rolleyes:

As long as kubuntu is in a different partition you should be able to just upgrade as normal

Hi Brian -

What are you upgrading Win7 to? The reason I ask is that MS wants us to use Anytime Upgrade to change between Win7 versions. Are you reinstalling an Upgrade version?

The best arrangement when you have separate HD's is to unplug the other OS during install, then boot via BIOS boot order or one-time BIOS Boot menu key (given on first boot screen) rather than using GRUB or Windows-managed Dual Boot.

hi gegrocker i am thinking of upgrading my windows 7 home premium 64BIT with pro or ult by buying the upgrade disk:) not just buying the key and downloading the upgrade.

Hi there
You shouldn't have any problems -- W7 upgrade will alter the boot record so you won't see the Linux option but -----------

After upgrading Windows boot from your Linux Distro disk and just "Repair" grub -- you might need to check that the partitions haven't changed e.g /dev/sda3 etc.

Cheers
jimbo

Duel booting with linux and windows without easy bcd

well i spent most the evening sorting out my bootloaders on the pc! i tried to use easy bcd Download EasyBCD 2.0.2 - NeoSmart Technologies but it made matters worse and i lost the windows 7! could not boot into anything. i tried to boot from my external dvd/cd drive with my rescue discs but even setting the bios to use it first to boot it just would not boot.so i had to take the side panel off and plug a internal dvd/cd in to the motherboard and hey presto! it booted first time in to my windows recovery disc!
so i repaired the MBR and windows was fine i tried to fix the grub2 bootloader but no success i managed to use a linux rescue disc that found the kubuntu and booted ok but i could not repair the grub 2 within the op system:( so i unplugged all the drives and booted linux kubuntu live disk and reinstalled over the ssd which worked fine. i connected the drives up changed the bios and now i can boot into both drives myself without the grub2 splash screen!! thank god!!
so it will be easy now to upgrade windows 7 if i choose to i dont have to worry about messing about with the bootloaders so my advice is always install linux distros on separate drives while your others are unplugged from the motherboard. :D
