Hide file extensions

Windows 7 forum,

I've been using XP for 10 years and am now trying Windows 7 as a
replacement. I have figured out how to do a lot of things but I
would like to hide all file and folder name extensions, things
like Date modified, Type, Size etc. These things just clutter up
the folder display especially when there are many icons in one folder.
I know you can go to Organize>Folder and search options>view> and
select "Hide extensions for known file types" but this doesn't do what
I want. This was very do-able in XP.

Is there a way to do this?

You're like me, love Windows 7 but realize the need for tweaks.

I like my folders like this

. Organize / Layout / only Details Pane
. Press ALT then go to View / select List
. Also turn off "Preview Pane" next to the Help Icon
. Organize / Folder Options / View / select the XP'ish options there

I also install ClassicShell for the "UP" folder icon and FileSearchEX for a classic XP style search tool.

Thanks that worked great. I did this to one folder but is there a way
I can do it globally?

The thing I don't like about windows 7 so far is none of this stuff is
intuative. In XP all you had to to was go to the Control Panel and
everything was there.

How do I install the ClassicShell and FileSearchEX? Both sound like things
I would like.

I have downloaded FileSearchEX and it's really fast. I don't think I need ClassicShell as I have
done most of what it does already.

There are many ways to make 7 act like windows xp but keep all the epicness of windows 7 in my opinion.

To make the file menu and all the classic menus look like you are used to, hit the alt key on your keyboard in any explorer window. (Like Computer for example.) Now choose tools-folder options. Click the view tab. Check the box to always show menus. Uncheck hide empty drives in the computer folder. Uncheck hide extensions for known file types. Click ok.

Thanks for the reply.

I followed your directions but folders still show the extensions.

Here's the state of the tools>Folder Options>view options for folders.

Always show icons, never thumbnails checked
Always show menus checked
Display file icon on thumbnails not checked
Display file size information in folder tips not checked
Display the full path in the titlebar not checked
Hidden files and folders > show hidden files checked
Hide empty drives in the Computer folder not checked
Hide extensions for known file types not checked
Hide protected operating system files checked
......

Is there something I missed or have wrong?


I'm not looking to make it look just like XP I just want to tweak some
things while I'm learning 7. Thanks for the link.

Once you get one folder setup the way you like, you have to "Apply" that to all folders.

"Organize / Folder Options / View / Apply to Folders" ... now Keep in mind this does NOT apply to what you see under My Computer. I have to set that view up differently and manually for some reason.
