hide icons

hey guys! just got me an Asus K60 laptop X64 bit windows 7 and I have this one little annoying problem! whenever I hide the desktop icons they re-appear after I restart the computer from sleep or log off/on. even my gf's asus does it too! the icons wont stay hidden!! and I have to press hide icons x2!! why is it doing this?

Hi beman36, it seems after 68 viewings there is no one who has an answer. Attempted to create the same problem you have indicated, albeit just couldn't. Looking at your specs did not bring me any suggestions, so hopefully someone with the same MB, and CPU will happen by to help; sorry I couldn't help. Good Luck.

aaawww no! the problem came back! I dont know why this is happening...ANYONE have any ideas?

Try this & see if it helps

Type gpedit.msc in start menu search programs & files and hit Enter.
Click on it and it will bring you to Local Group Policy Editor
On the right pane navigate to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Desktop.
Now in Desktop, double click to open the Properties of Hide and disable all items on the desktop.

Configure your choice there ( in your case click on enabled )
If Enabled, this setting removes icons, shortcuts, and other default and user-defined items from the desktop, including Recycle Bin, Computer, and Network Locations.
Don't worry all your programs still works by navigating thru the start menu.



Hit Apply > OK.

Restart to see a clean desktop with only your wallpaper.........


To show desktop icons again, ensure that the setting is Not Configured.

ok this is strange, but when I type gpedit.msc it says cant find it!! how can that be?

I have another alternative since gpedit.msc is not available for you.
Now we will do the registry hack........
Click start menu... run... type regedit and hit ok.....

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
On the right pane look for HideIcons double click on it and change the Value data to 1 ( hexadecimal )

Restart to take effect.

Hope this works for u.....

Hey there, I have an Asus Laptop also. I have an N81VP-D2. Same Issue.

I looked at a few possible fixes such as disabling all icons with Group Policy editor but that did not do it.

However, there is a combination of one reg tweak combined with another that will fix the issue.

Paste this Reg tweak in notepad and save as HideDesktopIcons.reg

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"HideIcons"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"HideIcons"=dword:00000001

Reboot machine and your problem is solved
