High pitched squeel when trying to power on?

My mother was given a pretty nice HP pavillion entertainment laptop from a friend, but when I plug it in, the blue light (where I plug it in) comes on, but when I hit the power button, there is a faint high pitched squeel. Any idea what the problem could be? It will not power on enough to run any tests or anything. It is fairly new and would be great for my mom considering it was free, and she's never had a computer before.

Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum. A laptop is not that much different from a desktop machine as to things that can make noise. The "squeel" may be a fan or hard drive that is malfunctioning. Laptops can be very fickle about temperature. There are sensors set to monitor this and will force a shutdown if the temp goes too high. If the "squeel" is from the hard drive, then you will not boot up but should have a blank screen and a blinking cursor. If this is the case then the HDD needs to be replaced. If it is the fan-then the unit needs to go to HP for repair.
I am biased about who should take a laptop apartr and thus my recommendation. I am also the owner of a Pavilion and keep all of the vents clear by using canned air every now and then. If the unit is still in warranty give HP a call to see what they can do.

Nothing at all happens except that, when I plug it in, the blue light (where the plug in is at) turns blue. When I press the power button, there is just a squeel, nothing happens with the screen. Thanks for the help though.

If you`re confident, pop out the hard drive. Push the power button, no squeal, there`s your problem.

As mentioned.
