My PC is not booting into Win 7 (was OK previously) so I boot pressing F8..

I then select 'Repair your computer' and I see a the Microsoft logo, progress bar at the bottom of my screen.

Eventually, I get a Windows background screen (deep blue at the bottom, lighter at the top, with sun ray patterns). But no icons, and low resolution.

My mouse is now working but no icons, and CTRL ALT DEL does nothing, neither does pressing the Windows key.

Odd because the PC seems stable but I can't actually interact with Windows.

Any ideas what is going on ?

Now I've shut down the computer and restarted in safe mode, I selected 'Last known good configuration (advanced)...

And I get a blue screen (of death...) :

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

Not good.

Any ideas or suggestions ?

It's a fairly old PC not my main machine, but would be handy if I could get it up and running. I would boot it up in Linux, but it won't boot from a USB stick (old BIOS I suppose).

And I don't have access to a CD burner.

Sounds like it could be a problem with the disk.

put the disk in another machine and check it.
