Hi

Okay - i know theres enough of these posts around on the internet to make a whole book series - but ive given up reading them; as they do not seem to be helping me.

Ive just got a laptop, in which i am wanting to connect to my desktop computer wirelessly - thus using HomeGroup.

I have set up a home group on my new laptop - created a password etc. I go to my desktop, it goes "Join Homegroup" i click join, i enter the password and then it just goes on one continuous loop of doing sweet FA (the loading bar just goes on and on and on and on....)

Here's what ive tried:
*Refreshing the HomeGroup
*Turning Services on and off (come back to that in a mo)
*Turning the firewall on and off (Kaspersky Firewall)
* Syncing the time of the two machines (to the best of my ability)

Ive used the never ending, more confusing than an ancient language - troubleshooter... which didnt do anything. It keeps complaining that certain services arent running properly.... and i have tried to get them to force start but they just wont budge. It tires to start the process - HomeGroupProvider - but it just (in task manager & services) says "Stopping" - its set to start automatically.... same goes for HomeGroupListener which is stopped.

For the provider i press 'Stop' and receive a lovely dialouge box telling me its unable to stop the servie as it "cannot accept control messages at this time". And now its complaining that i havent started the service and so cant stop it.

im getting very tired and fustrated with this pile of poo of software - windows is easy is what they say... im thinking id rather use linux right now. Any ideas?

(btw It doesnt seem to be the network adaptors or the router; as iTunes (laptop) can see my desktop's music library!)

Does each computer have this "Homegroup" set up on it? If not, you need to configure it on BOTH systems. Also, each computer needs a unique name and identifier description. Further, you have to name your "Homegroup" and enter this exact same name for both computers on each screen that asks for it during setup.

You also have too, on 7, go to:

Start > Right Click "Computer" > "Properties".

Scroll down to "Computer name, domain and workgroup settings" > "Change Settings".

Enter "Computer description" to what you want, if you haven't already.

Now click on the last option "Change..."

Under "Member of" make sure "Workgroup" is ticked and then put your Network name here.

Repeat this process again on the other computer if the other system is also 7 or Vista.

Doing all of that SHOULD get it working if it was a setup issue, rather than a services issue. I'm not familiar with any services issues on Networking, whether for a Home Network or more advanced Networking (over routers).

If it is truly a services problem, I know one thing that will fix it for sure without running around in circles... that's a clean install. Sucks, but that's my cure-all for issues that just can't seem to be figured out/solved and it never fails me.

Good luck and I hope it gets sorted out!

It sometimes helps to clear all files at the location below, reboot after delating the files in the location below.
C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Roaming\PeerNetworking

I hope that the machine named "iTunes" does not have the bonjour service installed on it which installs with iTunes as it will cause endless problems for you.

There is also a good chance that Kaspersky is causing this problem.
