Hi

I have a laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate that I want to give access to files on my Win 7 (home premium) desktop. So far I've not been able to even though I've jumped through the IPv6 hoops and got them both joined to the homegroup.

On my laptop, when I click on the Desktop icon in the window I'm told that "The network path was not found". After looking around for help, I tried the troubleshooter. Eventually this told me that I should "Allow Homegroup to communicate through McAfee Personal Firewall". Thing is, I don't have McAfee installed at all - can't even find any trace of it in the registry, services or msconfig.

My laptop was upgraded from Vista Ultimate and I'm wondering if originally Vista came with a McAfee trial or something. Either way, I've never used McAfee and if it was an option, I would have uninstalled it. Previously I only used ZoneAlarm (free) but now I'm using Windows Firewall.

So I guess my question is why is the troubleshooter telling me I have McAfee installed when I don't, and is this a likely candidate for the sharing/homegroup problems I'm having?

Thanks

It's very likely that McAfee is causing the problem, in fact most every A/V or third party firewall is capible of causing sharing problems. Zone Alarm is also famous for this. Upgrade installs can be problematic so if the problem persists try a clean install. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/31402-clean-install-upgrade-windows-7-version.html

I can't imagine why McAfee would be hiding on your system, that could be some type of upgrade problem. Other than that you should be able to allow for sharing by using the permissions settings.
