How can I delete DataMngrUI (BearShare)

It was a stupid move. But let's move on from that shall we?

So I uninstalled this program *BearShare* but some residual files where left behind. I figured out how to go to programs files and was able to remove all but this one haunting title. When I try to delete this file it states that it is being used in another program and can not be dismissed. :sarc:
When I open my home page it opens to Bearshare. In my system I have it set to Google. I do not use this, I simply plug in Google and go about my way.

I have checked online for help. No one seems to know the answer. I have MalwareBytes and Eset Nod32 and those programs have not found anything. One suggestion was to clean my registry. I am not sure how to do this. But would love to find a way to do so.

I Apologize if this is not the place to post this. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You in advance. :)

Hi Nocturnal77 and welcome to SF
Open your Taskmanager (CTRL-ALT +Del) and see if it holds a process with that name. mark/highlite it and click on End process. now close taskmanager and try to delete the file again.

In case it still resists, get LockHunter and use that to unlock theDataMngrUI
LockHunter is a free 64/32 bit tool to delete files blocked by any processes
That's safer as if I would send you through the registry to fix the issue manually :D

Hi SledgeDG, Thanks for the help so far.

It was not running in my task manager. In fact it is no where to be found. So I did download LockHunter and it found it only when I manually searched my C:\ drive.I then clicked to unlock it and it alerted me that my browser crashed. I tried to find datamngrUI again, but now it has disappeared. There are several files I am not sure of. See attachment. Help.png

I don't want to start deleting files and run into another issue. I have tried to delete the file again- datamngrUI and it still is not going anywhere. :(

Okay, so I just opened LockHunter again and found the Icon on my desktop for datamangrUI again. I tried to unlock it again, and it crashed my browser and also stated that it can not unlock it because it's locked in other processes?

It's certainly running somewhere :D

Go to Start, run msconfig (right click /run as administrator) and check the Startup-Tab for traces of DataMngrU, remove checkmark, click ok, reboot and delete the file.
In case that's a no go...
OK...different approach: Boot into Safe Mode
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html

try to delete the file from there. If that doesn't work, get autoruns
Autoruns for Windows

Start as administrator, and locate DataMngrUI in the Everything tab , remove the checkmark in front of it, reboot, remove the file

One suggestion was to clean my registry. I am not sure how to do this. But would love to find a way to do so.
Definitely Stay away from any and all so called Registry Cleaners.

Most of them will end up doing more harm than good in the long run.
Windows 7 does not need it.

The only safe registry cleaner is the one in Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner for Vista and Windows 7 edition

It run automatically, you won't see anything
But I am not sure if it still exists in there or if they removed it.

CCleaner is ok to use and fairly safe.

However, if you do not know what you are doing, you are taking a risk on messing with the registry a all.
My Advice, if you want to learn, go for it, but be prepared to nuke and reload if something goes wrong.

Yes you can backup your registry easy enough, but it ain't so simple for the average person to restore it.
Yes, it is simple enough for some of us, but, anyway,,, just take my word for it, it will be a pain if you don't know what you are doing.

As for getting rid of that file,,,You can also try

Unlocker 1.9.0

If you can't get rid of it in Safe Mode either. Then personally, I prepare to reload my system.
If you used Bearshare at all you could be infected.

Thanks for all your help!
I wanted to Thank You both for your help. I have finally removed that file I believe. Things look like they are back to normal.

One more question for you all. I have Malwarebytes and ESET NOD32 running on my system. Is it okay to do this or will become an issue?

Much Thanks again. :picnic:

Ps. I was able to delete the file after run/msconfig and removing the check mark for datamngrUI. The file is still there under msconfig, but I should not be worried about this? Everything seems back to normal. (d)

I have learned my lessen. Many Thanks to you!

While generally not a good idea to run two AV's ESS and malwarebytes should be OK since malwarebytes doesnt do live checking

Ken J-

Thanks. I will most likely remove Malwarebytes since I only downloaded it to search out that one file. :)

You're very welcome, Nocturnal
What you see in msconfig now is just an entry
The fact that you were able to delete it finally shows that it wasn't running at the time so you're ok for the time being.
Ken already answered your question about multiple AVs
So you're good to go
Thanks for the feedback
Happy New Year

Malwarebyte is not an AV scanner like ESET. You can have both on the system at the same time.
If you do a lot of surfing of unknown sites. It's a very good idea to keep Malwarebytes and run it from time to time.

At minimum once a month.

Thanks Tepid.

I tend to watch where I go for the most part. But maybe I will keep MalwareBytes just for the added protection. :)
