Solved How can I get my USB 3.0 ports to provide 900mA?

Hi!

My motherboard is asus sabertooth 990FX v1 with the latest bios and drivers, and I have a Galaxy S3 that I would like to charge faster. I know that usb 2.0 provides up to 500 mA and usb 3.0 provides up to 900mA. But when I check my usb ports on device manager (windows 7 64bit), they all seem to provide 500mA, even usb 3.0 ports. You can see the screenshot here:

So, my question is how can I get my USB 3.0 ports to provide 900mA?

that rating is the maximum current transfer, much like the theoretical maximum speed of usb 3 youll never get close.

you can get a 2amp mains charger on ebay for like 99p! thats 2000mA will charge it rather quickly at no ill effect to the battery

The rate at which a battery is charged is determined by the charger, not just the maximum power available to it. There is a safe rate at which a battery can be charged and the charger will not exceed it, no matter what the available current.

if its a desktop pc, get yourself a powered usb hub and run it off that, mines rated at 1.9A.

if its for a laptop your not in luck. you cant force usb to output at a higher ampage.
it will charge faster if the phones off, but it will still take 4 hours to charge a 2000mah battery at 500mah.

if charging that essential at speed get a spare battery and a cradle. that way you always have a fully charged battery as a backup... which is essential if your battery is as bad as on my s4!

In my case there is no charger, just a very high quality usb2.0 cable.

THIS is my question. Please ONLY respond to my question. I don't need any other advice.

S3's are safely charged via 2.4w which is 12v x 1000mA. I need to get my USB3.0 to provide 900mA to get close to that rate.

Again, there is no charger in this equation. Please read my question carefully before responding and waste my time.

My question is simple guys and I made it very clear. Thanks for your responses but I dont need any other advice than what I am asking. Simple: USB 3.0's are capable of outputting 900mA. Mines shows 500mA. How can I get them to output 900mA. You know, maybe a bios tweak i don't know of, or a setting on windows, or something like that which I don't know of.

I have got a reasonable answer on another forum, here it is in case someone needs the information:

"it is my understanding that you cannot modify the output voltages of your usb ports in software and bios (for good reason)

many usb 3 ports are may be still only 500ma and only some are higher.

ports which provide more voltage are typically dedicated to charging and the high amp charging ports on things such as usb hubs typically are shorted out so that they provide more amperage.

my suggestion to you would be to use a powered usb hub with a dedicated charging port if you must have the extra amperage for charging. this would allow you to view your files on your computer as well as charge it faster.

if you did not need to view files, your typical wall-wart charger works very well and some are capable of rather high amp loads for fast charging. of coure make sure it is within your phones specs if you are using a charger not designed for your phone.

generally though we are not talking about a huge increase in charging time. a 900ma charging might only charge the phone 30 minutes quicker than standard 500ma."
