I have a new computer running Windows 7. I set up Windows Live Mail, or at least it seemed to do it for me. This morning I was trying to figure out how to access WLM from another computer if I am away from home. I Googled but couldn't find an answer so I typed in live@ I(Ithink) I'm so confused with it all. I was taken to a hotmail site and logged in with my hotmail account. I didn't see my WLM settings there. Next thing when I went to my WLM and was about to send an email and clicked "to" there were dozens of email addresses that I didn't put there, old ones of mine and a lot of other old ones. Some are there 2 or 3 times so I need to delete them. I tried to do it from the windows start icon and found "contacts" but all the extra ones are not there to delete. I'm lost and still don't know how to access fWLM from another computer. So, could somone please tell me how to delete email addresses from contact list withing Windows Live Mail, and how do I access it from another computer.
Many thanks,
Josey.

Windows Live Mail isn't a "cloud" application, it resides on the computer and works with many other providers besides Hotmail. I suspect it has the ability to export contacts as a .csv file which you can perhaps import to Hotmail.

Well, I'm confused because evrything I've read says that Windows Live Mail is in the cloud and doesn't reside on the computer.

I just want to know how to delete all these extra email addresses that have somehow installed after I went to the Hotmail site. There are old ones of mine too from my bigpond account. Soem are there 2 or 3 times. I need to delete them
Thank you for responding.
Josey.

WLM uses Microsoft Skydrive for cloud storage of image attachments, but other than that you have to install it on a local computer to use it. Just go into your contacts (access button should be bottom left) and chose those you wish to delete.

There is a setting in there that allows you to stop the program from automatically adding fresh contacts to your address book.

I have installed Windows Live Mail on this new computer. To view the contacts I have to open a new email as though I want to send an email, then I see all the contacts. There is no access button at the bottom of the list. I've been able to delete some of the extra email addresses byt going to edit and sometimes I can delete them others I can't it's all very confusing. One would think there would be an addresses icon on the menu bar. One address I can't get rid of in fact there are a couple of very old ones belonging to people who no longerf even use those old addresses but even in edit they won't go.
Good to know that all my personal data is not in the cloud, that's the first time I've read that. Still would like to know how to access my emails from another computer please.
thank you,
Josey.

Main program window, bottom left... contacts... sub-window (all pictured!) opens... and you can delete any of your contacts using the commands shown on the top of that window... I'm not sure how it can be made any simpler to understand... :)

I found it but all the contact I deleted the other way by opening a new email and "to", have come up here and more 133 of them. I'm trying to delete them but no option there to do that.

You must think I am so dumb, but this is all so different to Outlook Express. I just clicked on one of the email addresses and thought I would highlight it and hit delete at the top menu and that did it. Ohmygosh I'm sorry. Now I just have to go through and delete the ones I don't want.
Thank you very much, Ummm, I hate to ask again but is there a way to find my emails when I am away from home. I am starting to think that I have to go to Hotmail web site for my Hotmail and Bigpond (which I have in WLM) for Webmail, am I correct?.
Many thanks,
Josey.

You cannot do it by opening a send mail window!!! Look at the screenshot and click contacts in the main program window, then you will see the sub-window pictured, complete with the delete command in the contacts pane....

Click on the Accounts tab at the top.
Click on the @+ to add a new account.
Fill in the info on the window that pops up.

You can see (partially) that I have two main accounts and a Hotmail account. You can add as many as you like.

Just one more tip... pressing alt will open the traditional file, edit, view, etc, menu bars... ;)

From there, in the contacts pane, you can import/export contacts in a variety of formats...

As for synchronising Live Mail across various computers there are ways to improvise and achieve this, but it's not at all a design feature of the program - it's definitely not "cloud" based I'm afraid...

Since your question has to do with contacts, it's important to decide whether or not you want to "sign-in" to the email program, Windows Live Mail, each time you use it. That's because signing in affects which contact list you will see in WLM: either your "signed-in" list or your "not signed-in" list. If you sign in, your contacts are synchronized with the website "contacts.live.com" and will be available to you from any computer you choose to sign in with. If you don't sign in you will see whatever contacts were placed directly on that computer's list when"not-signed-in". To sign in use the upper right corner of the main message window (a popup will give you the option to remember password for auto sign-in) and to stop signing in use the Options/Connections tab.

Good point Roncerr, but I must say I'd prefer never to sign in to the Microsoft hosted elements of the program as it means they can harvest the email addresses of every contact in your address book, and arguably more besides as with subsequent builds they even ensure the hosting of attachments is done on their servers.

Of course the same is true of any email provider, Yahoo, GMail, and many others. However they tend to make it very clear that you're using them for that service whereas Microsoft Live Essentials bury that information in the long list of small print which is seldom read by anyone.

Many thanks everyone for you helps and the tips about "alt", and signing in. I've only signed in once when I first started using Windows Live Mail, I thought I had to, maybe thats how I got all those really old email addresses added to my contact list.

Should I go somewhere else on this forum to ask how I can check my email from another computer when I am away from home.

This is what I think I am supposed to do;

I have Hotmail set up in WLM and that has it's own set of folders, plus my ISP is Bigpond and so I have a bigpond email account with all those folders. I do have a gmail account but rarely use it and didn't add it to WLM because I would have so many folders. Soooo!,

To view my email when away from home I think I am supposed to go to the Hotmail site to check those emails and Webmail to check Bigpond...am I correct in this or is there an easier way.

Thank you again,
Josey.

If you set your accounts in Live Mail as POP accounts and not IMAP accounts your multitude of folders will not be reciprocated in your local eMail client ;)

I'd recommend GMail, there are just so many facilities on offer. Never ever use my ISP to store mail as there's no control in many cases over the dstiny of what's on their servers if you migrate elsewhere.

I would never sign in on Live Mail personally, but again... it's just my take on matters!

Feel free to add to anyone's reputation who had offered you useful help... :)
