On advice here to keep OS disk space small, followed the tutorial
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/87555-user-profile-change-default-location.html
and moved my user profile from C:\user\name to E:\user\name

The problem is Windows upgrade (need to run for repair) will not accept profiles being on separate partition to the OS.
Also it will be an issue when I need to upgrade in future ... Don't move your Windows user profiles folder to another drive | ZDNet

I need to move my profiles back, anybody got any tips for doing this ...

Although user profile is on E:\ there is also some files under same name on C: even though they were moved as per tutorial.
I assume it would be best to merge ... (may be appdata items)
I tried the copy active profile ... but when I opted to copy & merge it with C:\users\name it blocked telling 'file is open in System'

Do I need to log on as a different user to allow me to merge the files ?

Any help on steps\ sequence appreciated.

I want to do that ... the issue (I assume) ... I will have to logged in as admin and different user to do this, do I allow profiles to 'merge' ... just concerned if I don't merge will there be some key appdata items lost.

check if registry setting still correct!
Did you do step 16 (it deletes profile on C)?
when I initially did this (over 18 months ago) yes ... since then 'some' profile items seem to have crept back in.

Just too alook in what is within teh C:\ profile ....

Some 'Wondershare entry' in appdata I can live without but aslo an Adobe folder in 'desktop' which contains historical versions information for Lightoom ... so again probably can be overwritten, or can I merge ?

As to Lightroom I now use a newer version, it must 'keep' these historical bits.

the exe is just an installation file. I think an installation has put the files in c:\users\yourname\desktop.
Wrong installation packages assumes the default location. You can delete the files, or put the stuff in your real "desktop" on E.

I have now reduced profile size by temporarily removing much of my content (music, picture, documents, video) so they will fit onto SSD
Thinking I should put profiles back as default in order that I can use 'upgrade/repair'
The decision on whether to move profiles back off C:\ after repair, can be made later.

It might leave them on C:\ but relocate folders elsewhere (music, picture, etc) as they are what takes up the space.

Welcome advice if I should just go ahead and work through 'Option 1' again, but transpose so I am moving E:\ to C:\

What is in appdata on C:\users\rick?
Folder local, locallow and roaming inside?
Many subfolders? Post screenshots of local, locallow and roaming (if they exist).

Don't relocate the stuff from E to C yet!!

Why copy & merge?!!! MOVE & merge is btter in this case. It updates "my documents", "my music" etc in registry. But why some file has been opened by system???!!! You are not logon as RICK I hope. Is source or destination file locked? Which file?

Anyway you have to define the new profile location BEFORE creation of the user...
Or just after user creation. Otherwise registry has a lot of pointers to E (new profile). In appdata are settingfiles as well. Also pointing to E.

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...-upgrade-8-1-pro-if-7-user-profile-moved.html

So DON'T relocate the stuff yet! Watch that thread every now and them

Extract from my response to you in your other thread about this same subject:

Of course you can move the profile folders back to C:. Simply move your personal docs, pics and media (the content of the folders you have moved) from folders like Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and so on in Users\Your_Username to an external device to make the current profile folders as empty as possible.

Now move the profile folders back to C: using the same method originally used for moving the folders, and upgrade.
