Hi hellbandit, Have a look here SBG6580 - How to get firmware upgrade? - Comcast Help and Support Forums
here is a quote from a poster

"That is not a modem, it's a gateway device and this is one of the big reasons many of us here recommend NOT to get combo gateways like this, it makes firmware upgrades impossible since they are controlled by Comcast and there is no offcial way request an update."

Does'nt look too good :(

Many people with similar problem using this device. Some have even created web pages about the problem.

The comments section in the link shows some adjustments you can make that may help.

If you`re renting it from Comcast, I would ask for a BRAND NEW router, you should not have to put up with that.

If it still persists you could consider buying your own Linksys.

I've had a problem with my internet disconnecting a lot when I play online games, and sometimes when surfing the internet. I'm just trying everything to fix this, so I'm trying to upgrade the firmware of my router.

I experienced dropping with my 6580 and did some google searching. In the end I changed three router settings and it cured the dropping completely.

Go in to the router settings, should be 192.168.0.1 and change the following.

"Basic/Setup" and change Ipv4 MTU Size to 1492
"Wireless/Advanced" and change "Fragmentation Threshold" to 2306 and change "RTS Threshold" to 2304

It may or may not help, good luck.
