In case you need some instruction, a while ago I wrote a little tutorial on how to deal with Virtual Box (which I recommend) and Virtual PC. You can download the PDF from here. It was written for Windows7 as a guest (the Beta at the time). But it works just as well for XP.
I recommend you allocate between 500MB to 1GB of RAM and 15 to 20GB of dynamic disk space( it will only use what it needs).

Give Microsoft Virtual PC a try, I've used it and never had any problems. I haven't tried it in windows 7 though. If it's XP sp3 you don't have to enter a product code, you can try it for 30 days without having to activate it.

isnt virtual pc the thing you use to run XP mode? if so i cant use it as my processor is incompatible

Yes and No, Virtual PC 2007 is what you used in the days before windows 7.

It lists Vista but not windows 7 but I bet it will work OK.

My understanding is that prior to sp3 you had to enter a product code or the install wouldn't continue. So if you had XP, XP sp1 or XP sp2 you had to enter a key during the install. XP with sp3 integrated lets you continue without having to enter a key. You then get a 30 day trial. I haven't tested it I'm just going by what i have read online.

It will not do full screen. But with Win7 as guest I could set it to equivalent of 16" screen (on a 22" real screen). The setting was in Win7. But I remember that with Ubuntu I could not get it bigger than 14".

Thanks, maybe the disk (XP SP3) I have is a slipstream someone did or something, but it would not finish the install without a key being entered first.

@severedsolo did you HAVE to enter a key to finish the install?

How much virtual memory have you set for "Display", and have you checked either 2d or 3d?

BFK yes i did, but it was SP2 not SP3, isseu i selected 128MB of graphic memory, and enabled 3d accelleration (2d was greyed out for some reason), and i set resolution to 1280*1024 and it full screened (think i may have selected auto resize guest display too)

It is really easy to slipstream SP3 and make a new install cd ... ?
