Yeah, well, I still remember the time when we used 5,25" floppy disks and computers had 8MB (!) RAM, so maybe that definition is correct after all...

I remember stacks of punch cards!

Remember how big the computer was?
They weren't called desktops........as a computer then was huge!

The first computer I saw was in 1962 or thereabouts and it was in an air conditioned room containing about fifteen full height grey steel cabinets with twin tapes spinning at the front. This was in London in the headquarters of the then British Railways who I worked for and it was attempting to work out the new railways timetables for all the London stations. A truly mammoth task that usually took about 100 staff to accomplish accurately. I don't thing the computer succeeded!

Yes, they were huge. There was keyboard/console on the work desk with which you c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y typed your data and instructions. One tiny mistake and you threw the stack of cards away and started again. I do not miss that one iota!

We're approaching 50% ancient and really really old and nearly 70% over 27.
When I first joined I imagined I'd be one of a handful of older people amongst a horde of geek kids who knew more at 14 than I could ever know.
Actually the last part of that is still probably true but they ain't a horde they're a handful

Well I'm 13, I'm a geek and I play sports -tennis, football, rugby etc.

Theres only a few younger ones here at SF... before my birthday I shouldn't have been here :shock:

Sorry but there's a logical mistake in your statement When we still used 5¼ floppies, I doubt there were not many computers with so huge amount of RAM...

Sorry but there's a logical mistake in your statement When we still used 5¼ floppies, I doubt there were not many computers with so huge amount of RAM...

you're right as usual, Kari.

see here - this 1988 pc has a new-fangled 3.5" drive, but only comes with 1 meg of ram as standard.
