I have just created a new user account and selected a desktop background image. So far, so good.
When one logs on to this new account the desktop contains several "shortcuts" to programs which, I prefer, not be available to this account.

I write "shortcuts" enclosed in quotes because they are not like the shortcuts on my personal account. The latter I can delete at will and only the desktop shortcut is deleted, without having any effect on the target program.

On the new user account, attempting to delete a shortcut requires administrator permission and then advises that the target program will also be deleted.:( Checking the Properties confirms that the icon is indeed a shortcut, but it doesn't behave like one.

How can these shortcuts be removed from the new user desktop?

Is the new account an Admin account ?
No, standard user account.

Why are there icons on this new account ?
Damned if I know. They duplicate some of the icons on my Admin acct. desktop.

Who put them there ?

Microsoft, I guess. I certainly didn't.

Need to revise my description of what happens when I delete a shortcut from the new user account desktop.

It does not affect the target program.

However it removes the same shortcut from my personal (admin) accout desktop. And if I create a new shortcut and place it on my desktop, it reappears in the new user account desktop.

The shortcuts you are taking about are probably on the "C:/Public" Desktop which is for everyone. Move the shortcuts to your own desktop directory.
