You wouldn't be able to disable Direct X 11 but knocking down the 3d acceleration which turns around and uses the DX API. The DirectDraw/Direct 3D would be put on the disabled list through the Catalyst settings. This is a standard setting for all ATI driven cards regardless of make and model card itself.

Disabling anti-liasing anti anisotropic filters along with lowering the settings from quality to performance would be how to control that. The CCC also has the custom settings box you can check to customize to some extent. There's no actual option in Windows for disabling DX besides manually removing all DX drivers which wouldn't be the best idea.

Ok thank you so much for the information...
So there would not even be a way to disable it by editing the driver for an AMD card??

I've been running ATI or AMD/ATI cards for years and never attempted to disable Direct X. You might try running with the basic drivers only eliminating the CCC all together to see if that will work since you wouldn't have the default settings for things like 3D acceleration being present and enabled.

The only other option would be knowing just what drivers to remove that make up the DX API from the "C:\Windows\system32\" folder. Ironically when trying to look up the list of exact file names for you I came across the DirectX Eradicator 2.0

Unfortunately that would only be for DX 2.0 to DX 9c since 11 is preinstalled on 7. One question here would be why you want to see 11 disabled? If you are running into a specific problem the source is usually something else to be looking at.

You're not the only one however who has asked about this. Here's one discussion on this found in the MS TechNet forums. How i can uninstall Directx 11 ??

Well I will be sure to give running the basic drivers a chance. and thank you for the links I will be sure to have a look at them and whether any helped.

In short I want to try an experiment. . . mainly with my HD 5870. If I use the drivers on the disk that came with the card, I am able to play all my games except for Dirt 3-as this uses DX11. Once I disable DX11 through the config file of dirt 3 and change it to dx9, the game works perfectly with no problems.

Once I install the latest drivers from AMD (12.4) all my games show the same symptoms as dirt 3 did with dx11, and so hence, I was wondering, if there would be a way to disable it all together just to see what would happen.

Ahh I see! Did you know you can install DX 9c on 7 despite 11 being present? You won't be able to on the next version however as the "incompatible with this version of Windows" message will appear there.

For many older game titles the latest and more recent driver sets and Catalyst versions have been a problem. There was quite a discussion on this in the stick on the Latest AMD/ATI drivers some time back when from the Cat. 10 5 on saw many asking questions. http://www.sevenforums.com/graphic-cards/1810-latest-amd-catalyst-video-driver-windows-7-a.html

I'm running an MSI Radeon 5750 1gb card here still seeing the old Catalyst 10. 4 version which was still newer then what came on the software disk but allows for some real old DX 7 Legacy to XP compatible titles to run. After that one the discussion went into the hard coding problems for OpenGL and a few other things as I recall.

Once you changed the game setting for DX 9 all went well showing you may be bettter going for the 9c redistributable package to see 9 installed there and may want to see if your card will run with the Cat. 4 by chance. I still haven't had a chance to see if AMD ever got that situation corrected as far as the old coding issues to run a newer version of the CCC.

Remember this version of the CCC is about 2yrs. or older at this time about when the two models we each have were first seen. The AMD support still has it available for both 32bit and 64bit alike. The 64bit flavor is found at ATI Catalyst

Some sites still have the full DX 9c onhand for download since your game problems are likely due to them looking for 9 not 11. The download link is found at the bottom of the left column on the page seen at Download DirectX 9.0c (full package) Windows Drivers - Software Patch.

The game titles you named are actually quite a bit newer where you may not run into any problems with the present or recent catalyst versions. The option for the 10.4 CCC is for any released back in 2005 or earlier that run into OpenGL problems or simply won't install or run.

For any that came out between 2005 and 7's 2009 launch most were still looking for DX 9 where the full package is a good idea if you didn't already see the older DX version put on previously. I guess the 64bit 7 will be the last Windows version that will see some oldies still run! :D

amorfati has that correct about sound cards and even the better onboard sound utilizing DX acceleration for things like surround sound, dolby to some extent, etc.

The one thing to know about version prior to Vista(DX 10), 7(DX 11), and the upcoming Windows 8 is that in the older versions Direct X was additional item you had to download from MS to see put on or a program installer especially many game titles would have the option for one DX version or another.

The gaming problems you have been going through suggest the games themselves rely on DX 9 being present since they are XP compatible where no DX version included. You got that by download off the MS site for the dxsetup.exe web installer or full download being the full redistributable package if not by way of some game installer.

Since most games are still XP compatible unlike desktop apps written for Vista, 7, and newer they can still use or may still require DX 9. That would seem to be the route to take. Each game's own requirements would be the best thing to look at on this just the same.

@night Hawk. Thank you for all the links in your previous message. In short I downloaded the full version of Dx9, installed it.. and sadly nothing changed (wasnt really expecting anything but ya...). I have tried the latest version of AMD drivers, and they still dont help with the games crashing.

I think I will wait untill windows 8 comes out and try that instead, Im also planing on lending my card to a friend for them to try out with their system. Just to see if there is a problem with it and the fact that (for what ever reason) it cant handle the load of Dx11???

@amorfati this is my problem, When I use the drivers on the disk that came with the card, I am able to play all my games except for Dirt 3-as this uses DX11. Once I disable DX11 through the config file of dirt 3 and change it to dx9, the game works perfectly with no problems. Hence why I feel like my graphics card cant handle Dx11?

Well now you see why I keep the older Cat. 10.4 version on rather then the latest. The problems with so many of the games you have one except the one is not just with DX11 and a need for DX9 but that they are older titles that are limited to some 50 extensions while the latest AMD/ATI drivers are geared for newer game titles that allow upto 75 extensions.

The hard coding for OpenGL is where the main problem is coming from. A good deal of older titles that run into this with the latest ATI CCC on also will be facing problems in 8! First off DX9 will not go on at all as well as any older version the game installer may have the option for. Many games require that their own DX installer is used.

The one thing about keeping some old titles around is finding out what the next version will or will not do along with what is seen with drivers and updates. For 8 once and I mean once you get an older title on and running the game play is smooth even with the CP being the beta form. But some old titles may not even install let alone run.

Gaming may see a big improvement in the next version. But that will be for how many game titles? Windows 7 is obviously the last where DX 9c can be applied for all those older titles and then you have the newer ATI drivers intended for new games only added to that!

Ah ha ok, I see what you mean. So should I try 10.4 and see if that works with my system??

And If I understand correctly, are you saying that you wont be able to play, let alone install games that were designed with Dx9...

I now know why there is a problem with updating my AMD drivers to the lastest versions, thank you for pointing that out :).

The problems mostly stem with older titles like Starcraft and older that rely on the older DX elements. Going back even further a game like Soldier of Fortune I+II won't run with any Cat. version newer then the 10.4.

On 7 that seems to be the older for that old DX 7 game. DX 9 works as well as the DX 7 installer for that one. On 8 however no DX 9 means it won't even install.

Surprizingly however another old title Return to CastleWolfenstein runs on the 8 CP! It still won't run with the newer then 10.4 CCC however. Of course then you have to look at just how old those two titles are 11yrs. now! Originally 98-XP compatible.

The 5800 series cards are close to the 5700s but may require a newer Cat. version. You need to find out which version came on the software disk for that reason to see if it was the Cat. 10.4 or newer. The one thing you can always do is try it to see that version goes on well and how the games run with it.

The one old 8bit believe it or not title still to be tested on 8 would the original Wolf3D or Duke Nukem on DosBox to see if DosBox will even go the upcoming version or not! :D That would something for sure!
