How to Get USB Headset with Mic to Work

I recently purchased an HP stereo headset with built-in mic, and I can't get it to install. When I plug it in to the USB port it makes the sound that means it knows something's plugged in, but that's all it does. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with my Windows Update messing up that I addressed in another thread or not. Unfortunately there wasn't a CD in the package, and there is no driver available that I can find to download. It wanted to use Windows Update to install the software, which is on the fritz. Is there any way to get it to work? Thanks.

No driver, should just have to go into sound and find it listed in recording devices and playback devices and make it the default and tune it to your liking in properties.

Right click your volume icon in task tray and options appear to get to PD/RD, or type SOUND in Start | <run box> and select it from results.

If it doesn't appear, I would look in Device Manager.

If you are using an on-board sound chipset, it's likely made by Realtek:

Start | <in run box> put Realtek, if Realtek HD Audio Manager is in results you have previously installed the driver and that is the tool for main settings but the USB device won't be affected by that since it's not plugged into it, just FYI.

i had someone try that using remote access, and they said drivers were missing or corrupted, so that's why it wouldn't install. Their suspicion was that it was stemming from the same problem that has my Windows Update all messed up.

Do you have any important data you need to keep....if so, save it to an external drive, then format and clean install.

That's what I'm trying to avoid. I was only going to do that as a last resort, but I may have to. Blech. Plus I don't have a Windows CD. I could possibley be getting a laptop anyway, so this desktop may just become a gigantic music storage device.
