Wow you guys have been busy since I last checked! So just to make sure I understand what you are saying.

Set WU to manual and check for updates. Then install any and all updates it pulls in, except updates that specifically name Internet Explorer? Or are there some other KB updates I should be watching for and omitting?

Thanks,

Interesting, I just checked for updates and the only update I was offered was IE10, nothing else at all.

Except IE11 which I have hidden, and it is only a "optional" update at this point.

If you hide the IE10 update you may be offered either the IE 11 one (in which case hide that as well) or the IE 8 updates - or IE9.
The trick here is to ensure that you have a fully-updated system at all points - BEFORE updating the version of IE.
then install each version of IE, update that fully before updating to the next one.
This generally seems to work better than a leapfrog upgrade, where there is a history of problems.

Ok I hid both updates for IE10 and IE11, then restarted Windows and checked for updates. It says Windows is up to date. Shall I try a fresh download of IE9 now, via the link Bill provided 4 or 5 posts earlier?

I have a sneaky suspicion that MS is no longer offering IE9 through WU or IE8 updates (which you may already have anyhow), - unhide the IE10 update, and see what that does.

I built up a system over the weekend and they were still offered.

Checking again today (inside a VM) shows them too. WU is so fun.

My employer is still using (and only supporting) IE8 :-(

Let's hope that MS will drop updates for IE8 soon.

OK - try installing it now - what happens?
Once complete (pass or fail) post the IE10_main.log and the windowsupdate.log files.

HOLY FREAKIN COW, it worked!! I'm finally on IE10 and have IE11 hidden, so as not to mess this up. Am also going to create a restore point now. Thanks so much to you all, especially Noel and Bill for sticking with this for so long. You guys are amazing.

Phew! ;)
Glad we got there in the end - make sure that you install the IE10 updates that may be available (although many will have been installed during the install process anyhow)

Good luck!

Better still mate this might be an opportune time to start using imaging

Personally I set mine after a long and hard fix and then on a weekly basis on all my machines:)
