How to install AIK and then create a Win7 dvd

I have recently upgraded my computer from vista to seven and as i had many problems with it, I was later advised to make a clean reinstall.

To do so, since it is a student version downloaded from microsoft's website (no physical dvd then), I had to make a windows 7 ISO file in order to boot from a seven dvd.

To do this, I need to install AIK first (so as to later have the possibility to use the 'oscdimg' command), by downloading an ISO file. I have done so and am now unable to open this ISO file with daemon tools. I am able to do it with Magic Iso, though when I start the install, the AIK install program asks me to put a cd in...

Can you help please?

As you know, I want to do a repair install as you advised it to me earlier, booting from my newly created boot dvd. Yet I need to be sure that all my programs as well as my files (photos, films, iTunes muscis folder, random documents...) will still be there when I'm over and done with the repair install.

I have heard of the windows.old folder, should I expect all my files to be saved in there and not where they were originally (files currently on D:\ drive for example)? Also, will an image of my programs be saved or will they be installed exactly as they are now.

I don't have an external hard drive which explains my worries...

Thanks, that sounds very good. However, I don't have an external hard drive to use Easy Transfer. Also, will the files I have saved onto my D:\Drive be copied too?

I read in your link that all my drivers will need to be reinstalled, can you please explain? For instance, graphic card, sound, lan connection and video drivers might disappear, is that it?

I have also read that I will have to reinstall of my applications, does that include MS Office 2007? I do not have the install DVD so that might be a problem...

I would also like to add that I have already validated my copy of Seven even though it was not working well (I thought that would enable me to use windows update)

Could that be a problem once I have my Win 7 reinstalled? Will I have to revalidate it?

The repair install in Win7 is run from its desktop, an Upgrade install over the current installation which saves programs, files, and settings but reinstalls the OS.

If you can't boot into your Win7 installation now, boot into the Installer Repair console and run startup repair repeatedly until it boots the OS.

A better idea for you now might be to back up your files and boot from the Win7 installer, use Custom>Advanced tools to wipe your drive, configure new partition(s) as you wish, then format and install Win7. There will be no windows.old file in this case.

windows.old is just a copy of all of the files from your previous installation saved if you clean install from the previous OS desktop over the old OS. You can drag files out of there to populate your new folders, or bring them through the partition from a dual- or multi-boot OS. But you cannot rely on windows.old for backup, as your files always need backing up when you Upgrade or install. Use flash or DVD's if you don't have external.

Thanks, I think I'll go for the clean install, no messing around with a repair install if it's actually the same as an upgrade install. I now have to find someone who can lend me an external ! I'll use "Windows Easy Transfer" and save manually all that cannot be saved automatically.

I heard my drivers would be erased though, does that mean none of my sound, video, lan connection, graphic card drivers will work when I'm done with the clean install? If so, how will I be able to reinstall them, I have a recovery dvd for Asus, I don't exactly know what it does, and I have a cd with drivers, I'm thinking that would be the way to go, unless they're out of date now.

Windows 7 installer is very complete with drivers; whatever it doesn't provide will quickly come in on Windows Updates.

If some specialized driver doesn't make it, then browse from Device Manager>update driver tab to the driver disk you have, or look for it on the manufacturer's product download page for your model. Google will find it if those don't, just google exact hardware name.

And you can backup your currently installed drivers by saving Windows/system32/drivers file.
