How to install XP from CD into VirtualBox?

I currently want to test if installing an OS through the CD might be better for me since I'm having many problems converting my Windows XP Mode image.

Basically, I've installed VirtualBox, created a new machine, went into settings and mounted my DVD drive with the WinXP CD in it, and clicked OK and it does nothing. I click start and it can't access the kernel driver. Now what?!?! The user manual says I can proceed to install from there. It doesn't seem to detect my D drive?

Can you make an ISO from your CD and then mount it and install from that?

That's what I was thinking, but that would take a whole 'nother 30 minutes or so!

Really...It usually takes me a couple of minutes to make an ISO. No more than 5.

Looks like Virtualbox may not support your DVD drive...making an ISO image of XP is a very probable solution

vBox does support installation from a CD. But it is tricky and takes MUCH longer than from the .iso. I once did it and it took 6 hours - just unacking the files took 5 hours. It is much better to do it from the .iso.

PS: just saw that you are still having trouble. Either something is wrong with your .iso or you made a mistake as per step 1.2. in my tutorial - have a look. And don`t worry that the tutorial was written for win7. It is the same thing for XP.

This thread seems to suggest that you should reinstall VirtualBox and use the "repair" option

Looks like you have a faulty vBox...I would uninstall it completely and reinstall the newest version from the website

I just downloaded it. VirtualBox 3.0.12. It doesn't get any newer, my friend.

I didn't say that you needed to upgrade...I said that you needed to "reinstall" and choose the "repair" option.

Poor Hugh....he has had his string of bad luck when it comes to virtualization. I've been living and breathing VM's for years, and almost every version has worked great for me....but this poor guy cannot seem to get any of them working well.

Fantastic. Glad that worked for you. Installing from ISO really is the best way. I don't even know if I have ever actually installed from a cd with a virtual machine

Have you guys noticed that VBox doesn't integrate the mouse very well like Win XPM? You have to keep clicking right ctrl. Hope it gets better after all the drivers are installed.

Do you mean that you have to hit right-ctrl to get out of the VM? If that is what you mean...that is by design....until you get the virtualbox additions added on. It's the same for Virtual PC, VMWare and Virtualbox.

It's the vmware tools, virtualbox additions and virtual pc add-ons which provide the support for changing resolutions and seamlessly mousing into and out of the VM's.
