I am running Widows 7 Home Premium. Recently my live mail disconnects itself from the server after being inactive for a short while. I have to restart my computer to get it to connect back. Read several threads and followed their advise on how to repair, with one problem. When I go to uninstall/change, it does not give an option to repair, only uninstall. It says there is a problem with one or more of the Live Windows live programs, to fix try uninstalling and reinstalling Windows Live. I do not want to totally uninstall Live because of the chance of losing all my contacts and emails that are already saved.

That fixed the problem for about a day. Now it is back to disconnecting Windows Live Mail from the server after setting inactive for a while. Any other ideas?

larsan,

You might want to turn off eMail scanning in any AV software you're running. This is a redundant feature of AV software - all eMails become files and the file scan is sufficient to catch bugs.

Found this, it might be worth checking.

The answer instructs you to make sure connections settings are correct in all accounts.

This is difficult to resolve with the limited information. Are there any entries in your Event Viewer that pertain to WLM? Error codes...messages? That would be helpful.

No error messages. When I open WLM message status it says not connected. Closing WLM and restarting does not help. Have to reboot computer. Message status in WLM shows tasks that are completed and not completed. Shows checking for messages and sending messages. Shows messages attempting to be sent, even when I have sent none. Also, when I click send/receive, it shows 5 email accounts with the same name. Could this be the item causing the problem? If so, how do I delete some of them and how do I know which ones to delete?

It is only WLM that disconnects. Should I go back to WLM 2009? Where can I find a link?

You can return to 2009 but will require uninstalling your current version first resulting in losing your messages if not backed up. Use this View attachment wlsetup-web.zip to install 2009.
If its not used correctly, you will get the same problems. Its your decision.

I am not that experienced, know just enough to be dangerous. What do I need to do?
Seems to be happening after I do try and send an email, if that helps

larsan,

Ok - not an AV eMail scanning issue.
Please - do NOt go back to WLM 2009. WLM 2012 is the best version out there, 2011 had too many issues.

Could you describe how you are using WLM - there are basically two ways
1) Offline - pop3 / imap client
2) Online - Live Id client

I use WLM strictly as a pop3 client - I connect when needed and download msgs or upload msgs. i don't need to stay connected. I guess I'm saying i don't understand the need to stay connected. I understand that you are having difficulties sending / receiveing eMail - so all we have to do is figure out the best way to solve that issue.

Just so I understand - you upgraded from 2009 to 2012, is that correct? MS made some underlying changes in WLM 2011, so the upgrade to 2012 might need another kick (a repair).

Repairing WLM:
type wlarp.exe in the start menu search box and hit enter when it is found
- select repair on the dialog box presented.

The multiple accounts certainly could be the problem - I'll wait until you post a screen shot as RodeRunner requested.

I think Rode wants to see how your account(s) are configured - go to accounts, right click, select properties.
The servers tab and advanced tab are more important than the others.

If you only have one account, then the WLM database is confused in some fashion. If this is the cause, the easiest and best practices is to start anew with a fresh WLM.

You can download a full install instead of a web install - sometimes that is a better route
Full version 2012 installer (131 MB)

Don't install it yet - try the other things first.

Ok, POP3 sends/receives and disconnects from the server. I don't think you're description accurately identifies the problem. I checked cox and it was painfully slow, but the servers and ports are ok as posted in your screen shots. Other mail servers tell you to set "My Server requires authentication", but all that does is associate your id and password to the SMTP side - you could try ticking it to see if it helps.

Ya know what? Could you post screen shots of the other tabs in the account? I sort of stepped on Rode when I said only the general and advanced tab are important to me. Rode might want to see the other tabs. sorry 'bout that.

Could you post screen shots of what you see:
- When I open WLM message status it says not connected.
- Message status in WLM shows tasks that are completed and not completed.
- Shows checking for messages and sending messages.
- Shows messages attempting to be sent, even when I have sent none.
- When I click send/receive, it shows 5 email accounts with the same name.

The break apart msgs and remove from server after values are in RED - I've never seen this before. Neither is selected... hmmmm I don't think that's the issue though, perhaps just an anomaly.

Try manually setting up a 2nd account for Cox (CoxSSL)
On the first setup dialog tick the manually configure checkbox

enter your known values (ID, password, server names....)
on the advanced tab:
tick SSL for both SMTP and POP3
make sure that
SMTP - 465
POP3 - 995

Server timeout - 1 minute should be long enough
tick - Leave a copy on the server

Save it and then edit the account you just made to change the name on the general tab to CoxSSL

make sure that the new account is the only one sending and receiving (include this account when ......). That means you'll have to edit the other account(s) to untick that option.

Try eMail.

You should edit the 1st image, your user name is showing someone could start sending you email.
