That won't turn off aero features such as aero shake though but it does stop things such as glass being used.

I can only imagine he would want it off to increase performance maybe?

That would just be silly. Aero works on the graphics card, anything else you chose would steal CPU time from everything else.

Yeah but doesn't aero slow things down if you don't have good ram or graphics card? Not trying to contradict you here, actually trying to learn a bit more about it :) He hasn't posted his specs so not sure if his graphics card can fully support aero.

Can't imagine another reason... Personally, I love aero but have read if you have don't have a good graphics card or enough ram, it can slow your system down???

AERO is rendered all on the GPU and while it does use a little bit of RAM...that isn't the bottleneck here...

If he has a very poor GFX that can actually run AERO it would be of benefit to probably turn it off...otherwise running Windows 7 Basic is the more resource hog...

Comes down to your GFX...I would much rather have the CPU focus on other things than rendering a desktop...most of the time your GPU isn't doing anything anyways...

That is also the reason why some games/apps kick the theme into Windows 7 Basic when ran...without going to technical...those software don't want to share

When you run a full screen game or any other application really. The Desktop Window Manager (handles Aero) is automatically suspended.

thats what i thought, i remembered reading somewhere (dont know if its true) that Vista used to hold all windows that were open, whether minimised or not in the RAM but 7 drops them when they arent visible
