Error indicates Windows is not genuine. Believed to be the original OS (but checking on that to confirm). Microsoft wants $149 contract to resolve the problem and guarantees they can fix it. (Can they really?)
HP wants $49 and to lock into a monthly contract for a year. Maybe they can fix it.
The Windows Product Code is on the bottom of the laptop and confirmed valid.

When the warning pops up and I try to do validate it just tries to sell me another copy of Windows. There is no place to enter the product key and there is nothing where it should be displayed on the control panel system properties page.

The laptop has two drives and many partitions. I'm hoping someone here knows how HP typically does the install. Maybe there is a recovery partition?

How does one restore to factory defaults and if you do do you lose Microsoft Office?

The laptop does ALL updates and not just security updates. Office has a product key. But Windows seems to have lost that key.

Downloaded and installed Malwarebytes Anti-malware. Ran a full scan (took 8.5 hours). Removed 4 files. (I didn't write them down - hopefully they're saved in the program.) Don't want to look now because I have it running Avast full scan.

The installed Product Key can never be activated - it's the Default Key.

The indications are that the installation was enabled by a hackers Activation Exploit - which was broken when an update corrected one of the hacks.

Is there a COA sticker on the case? For which version and edition of Windows? If there is no COA sticker for Windows 7 Home Premium, then the system is not licensed for it, unless you have purchased a retail license.

The BIOS date would tend to indicate that the machine shipped with Windows 8 - the question is whether it shipped with Standard Windows 8, or Windows 8 Pro. The Win8 sticker colour will tell you which.

Thanks for the reply, Noel. The laptop originally shipped with Windows 7 Home Premium. The stickers are valid and Microsoft confirms the Product Key on the bottom of the laptop is valid. But where that should appear in Windows is just blank.

I created a repair disc and determined there was another install of Windows protected by a password. Because the seller refuses to provide any details about what he did or did not do to this laptop, my best guess is he didn't even know how to reset the password so he just installed another drive and installed Windows 7 Home Premium and Office 2013 on that new drive.

The Office 2013 on the new, larger drive appears to be valid and has a product key. The Windows on that drive says "not genuine".

The Windows on the other older, smaller drive appears to be valid, but it has problems. I restored it to factory settings, but when updating the graphics driver I get a blue screen of death and have to do either a system restore or reset to factory settings again to recover.

This explains that error I'm still trying to fix:

"0x0000003B" or "0x000000D5" Stop error in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2

Stop error code 0x0000003B (SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION) on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 when you use some IEEE 1394 devices

Error: "SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION STOP: 0x0000003B - Microsoft Community

My hope is that I can fix the original Windows and then move Office over from the other drive. Right now it is doing yet another system restore trying to fix the BSOD. It occurs whenever I try to update the graphics drivers. I need to figure out the appropriate sequence for installing drivers and updates to keep that from happening again.

Let's try and fix the problems in the MGADiag report first - and along the way we may fix other problems as well.

Best way to startto fix it now (since we don't know which version of the RemoveWAT Activation hack was used) is to run WATFix....

Download WATFix - make sure that you UNTICK the box for the 'download manager, and click on the link on the left of the page, not the big shiny button on the right (which is an ad for the download manager!!) - and use that - extraxt the .exe file, and run it, then reboot.

Post back with another MGADiag report, and we'll then see what we can do with the rest of it.
