HP laptop mute button stuck on (orange)

Works for me

I got the mute button to work again! Hopefully this can help someone else out! I clicked on my speaker icon and then went up to the laptop icon (at top of volume box). In the new box, under "General" tab, I clicked on "Properties" (under controller information). In the new box (IDT high-def audio codec properties) under the "general" tab I clicked "Change settings". I then clicked the "driver" tab the clicked "update driver." After an auto restart my mute button works as it should! GOOD LUCK! The orange has been bugging me for WEEKS!

The above worked for me as well! Thanks for the post, this problem has been driving me crazy!

Similar procedure works for Vista 64 too

I was having the same problem with the stuck mute button, it would stay orange even though if touched it would toggle the mute icon on and off on the speaker icon on the task bar. My problem was a bit worse, only the sub-woofer speaker on the bottom of the laptop was working, no output from the top speakers at all. I tried rolling back the driver and it worked initially, but the light was stuck again after a restart. So from Device Manager, I first uninstalled Nvidia high definition audio then i uninstalled IDT high definition audio codec. I then clicked, "Action" and "Scan for Hardware Changes" Windows noticed the missing drivers and installed the most recent versions and all is well. Thanks for the information, it was very helpful.

I thought I was the only one with that strange orange mute light mine comes on then will be off but makes no sound and I am living with it on an dv9720us HP notebook glad every one is finding the right drivers for the problem. Light went orange when i typed the last sentence but went out when I touched it as it should.

Here is what I did and it worked.

I went to the device manager. Then went to sound and video game controllers. Mine had two devices show up. I clicked on each one and then went to the driver tab. I rolled back each driver. As soon as I rolled back both of the drivers the orange light went off on the mute button. Then I clicked on each device again and went back to the driver tab and updated the driver on each device. The orange light has not come back on.

Not sure if this will work for you, but it really was an easy solution for me.

Here I am in July 2016, finding this solution to be the best I could find. My HP Elitebook 840 G2's F8 Microphone Mute is ON and I no longer can use my mic for skype or webex. After spending hours of downloading latest BIOS, HP hotkey support, etc. I found this post once I followed the quoted instruction, the F8 light is finally Off! I followed the exact instruction (I had only one High Definition Audio Device), and once I rollback'd the driver, the light went OFF. I can't believe Real Tek or HP had not updated a driver that would fix this problem during this time. But thank you!!
