Well, the page you directed me to came back with the following message:

"HP is committed to providing the best experience for HP products in the Windows Vista operating environment.
Today, a solution for your product is not available in Microsoft’s Windows Vista. Drivers will be posted as they are completed.
HP aspires to provide the most up-to-date information on HP drivers and software. Please check back for updates."
They just want to sell me a printer, I guess.

Okay, so I found a work-around to this problem. The bad part is you need a computer that's able to print to the laserjet on your network, but it works!

Here're the basic steps:

  1. Install pdfCreator from PDFCreator | Get PDFCreator at SourceForge.net on your Windows 7 machine. This is a 'virtual printer' that turns anything you send to it into a PDF file. It appears as a regular printer in windows.
  2. Create a shared folder on the computer with the printer attached. I called mine 'Spool' and put it in my root directory.
  3. Open up PDFCreator and go to Printer --> Options --> Auto Save.
  4. Check the 'Use Auto-save' box. Select pdf as the format to use.
  5. Check the 'Use this directory for auto-save' box. Enter the shared folder on the other computer that you created in step 2.
  6. Close the pdfcreator properties window.
  7. Install Batch Doc Print from batch print pdf and doc files, print directory on the machine with the Laserjet 1000 attached.
  8. Open Batch Doc Print. Go to Tasks --> Watch Folder.
  9. Click 'Browse' and select the shared folder you created in step 2.
  10. Check the 'Monitor the folder when windows start up box.'
  11. Click 'Add' and then OK.

Now all you have to do is set PDFCreator to be your default printer on your Windows 7 machine and make sure your printer computer is turned on when you want to print! The only downside to this is that Batch Doc Print isn't free, so you have to click 'Try' every time your computer starts up. This doesn't limit it's functionality, so for me it's not a big deal.

I've found another way around this problem. HP makes the best, most reliable printers... they last a long time. However HP is notorious about not supporting those printers after they have replaced them in their product line. After trying vista, I never went there because there were NO vista drivers offered. Now that I am going Win7 64-bit I thought I was screwed.

I have a Laserjet 3330 multifunction printer from 2002 that is used at home and is still going very strong. It is installed on an HP print server attached to the network switch in my home office.

On the assumption that one HP PCL6 Laserjet is much like another... I tried installing an HP M3027/M3035 MFM PCL6 64-bitdriver from the RTM built-in diver list. To my surprise it worked flawlessly... even the manual duplex was supported the same way.

Unfortunately, the scan function still eludes me. The send a fax from your PC function I can live without.

I your case, look at other entry Laserjet printers. the LJ 1200 came after the 1100. I don't remember what replaced the 1200. But try today's entry Laserjets... P1006/P1006/P1505. You will need a driver to support the PCL5 or PCL6 function in the 1100.

Try this strategy.

Interesting. But does this only work for an independant print server or a printer attached directly to your machine? Because I can't seem to install a different driver for a network printer attached to another machine. It always wants to install the driver from the other computer.

I don't know whether it works with the USB plugged directly into your PC. I do have a HP PhotoSmart 8250 installed on my XP SP3 PC and did try to see if the driver was in the RTM for the Win7 test system. It was and I installed it as a local printer with printer on LPT1 for now. All that means is that there is a 64-bit driver and it did install. I have not tested it on the printer.

My 3330 MFM is on the network. When I installed it as a M3027/M3035, I did it as a local printer but used an HP TCP/IP port on 192.168.1.110. I created the port as part of the install process.

The drivers in the RTM are the PCL or PS drivers that HP has on their website for most printers. They are not the "full boat" ones that equal the the ones that come on the CD. However, they do print and support all of the print functions of the printer. In the case of the 1100, their are no scan or fax features to worry about.

Breaking news... I just tried to add a printer and found a 1100 driver in the list on my RTM (7100) PC. I did use the "Windows Update" button under the list of printers. This is supposed to go out to MS and get all the latest drivers. Try this first. Maybe your problem has been solved.

I'll try, but I doubt it. HP stopped releasing new drivers for the 1000 after XP, and they never released 64-bit driver for it. I haven't seen anyone make it work on 64-bit OS other than the method I used. The problem is the host-based printer; if it had a processor this issue could be worked around.

I was not thinking about older devices when I purchased a 64 bit WIN 7 system. I have a Laserjet 5M, 10 or 15 yrs old? on our network. I chose to have WIN 7 get the driver automatically from the internet and I was up and printing in less than a minute.

Yes and that works because those printers have their own print processors. Laserjet 1000s are host-based printers, dummy printers that rely on the OS of the machine they're attached to in order to print. As there is no 64-bit driver for the HP1000, this is simply not possible with any 64-bit OS.

My old HP 1220C inkjet printer is supported, even on x64 through Windows Update. I can't see any system how hp decides to support some printers, ans others not.

And what is nearly unbelievable: My Epson Stylus Color 600, more than 12 years old, is supported too.

For some crazy reason, they still don't want to support the Lazerjet 1000. It's not on that list. And if it's a host-based printer, how come it works with the computer turned off. I can start a print job of 500 copies, shut the computer off and the printer keeps on going until it finishes, or runs out of paper. I can add paper and it will continue. The only time I need to fire up the computer again is to start another job going.

Anyway, I guess I can just hook the printer to the old XP computer.

An even better work around!

OK, you got me thinking about this work around. So I tried it. And it works, but not to my satisfaction. That Batch Doc Print is okay, but annoying and not cheap. So then I had the epiphany! I installed PDF Creator on my XP box instead and set it up as a network printer (so it would download a variety of drivers for 95, 98, xp, vista, win7, etc).

Then I configured PDF Creator to auto-save to a specific folder (using timedate as default name). Then I told it to print after the save to the LJ1000 hooked to it via USB.

Next I set the new PDF Creator printer as a sharable printer.

Next, on my WIN7 I created a new network printer and selected the PDF Creator.

Now, whenever I print I just select the PDF Creator printer and voila! The document is printed on the LJ1000 just like old times.

I hope this is helpful.

Just did it in about 15 min. Next install will take about 5 min.

TraderDoc, you are the man with that PDF Creator program. My Win7 64 bit laptop now prints to my XP 32 bit laptop with a HP laserjet 1000 attached via USB.

Make sure to install the PDF creator as a SERVER on the XP computer.

Ive been refilling my 15A cartridges using inkowl refills at about 10.00 a reload www.inkowl.com

The printing is a little slow, but hey you dont have to buy another printer.:D:D:D
