Okay, I'm not very tech savvy and I know nothing about this netbook because it's my husband's and I've never used it. All I know is, it runs Win7.
After the update, which completed yesterday, he couldn't get past the password screen so we tried an external USB keyboard and it made no difference.
I'm guessing it was a corrupted update so I tried starting the netbook in safe mode and I eventually found my way into "repair your computer." I intended to set it back to an earlier date and it only gave me one option, which was earlier today and it failed.
So, I'm guessing I can't do a fresh install of Win7 because not only do I not have the disc, but the CD/DVD drive is external and goes through a USB port.
As you can tell, I have no clue and obviously, I can't go to the start menu or anything like that.
I believe he has Norton or AVG on the netbook but I can't disable it because I can't get into the computer. (Or I simply do not know how.)
It was suggested to me that I should remove the battery and hold the power button for 20 seconds, then someone said 40 seconds and someone else said a minute and none of that worked.
As if that wasn't bad enough, lol, my own desktop (WinVista) has a non-working CD drive and really temperamental USB ports so I doubt it will be any use helping if this is not an easy fix. I would welcome your comments on this.
Thank you:)

Welcome to SevenForums.

Now I've got a simple mind and can only work on one problem in one thread. Would you decide which problem I should address?

How can I get past the system restore failure, if at all? Would it help if I posted the error message code?

Can you boot into Safe Mode?

BOOT TO SAFE MODE
Ø Power down your computer.
Ø Power up your computer.
Ø IMMEDIATELY—Start tapping the SPACEBAR
Ø When the Windows Boot Manager screen appears,
Press the F8 key
Ø The Advanced Boot Options screen will appear.
Ø Using the down arrow key, highlight Safe Mode
Ø Press the ENTER key.

In shorthand,
PowerUp | Spacebar until Windows Boot Manager
| F8 | Safe Mode | ENTER
=========================================
=========================================

Now, use following procedure to restore to an earlier restore point.

RESTORE TO A PREVIOUS SYSTEM RESTORE POINT
WIN | type SYSTEM RESTORE | ENTER | NEXT
Choose a different restore point button | NEXT |
Show more restore points checkbox (lower left)|
Highlight the desired restore point |
Scan for affected programs (lower right) |
make a note of affected programs |
CLOSE | NEXT | FINISH

WIN = key with the wavy Microsoft flag on top.

The first thing you should do with the netbook is make sure you have made a backup of any important data. This way whatever happens someone will be able to help you get things back in shape.

Would be nice, but from her first post
couldn't get past the password screen

I'm hoping that at least we can get to safe mode and if lucky have a pre-problem restore point.

You can still get data off the hard drive in a number of ways and this should be the number one priority.
@Boobarella
If you don't have anything of great importance on the netbook then this isn't an issue.

I certainly don't have anything of any importance on the netbook, lol, it's not mine. I have my own important stuff duplicated on 2 thumb drives, in case one of them ends up not working.
I can go into safe mode, I think I've been in there about 10 times now, but it keeps going to that password screen. I must be doing something wrong. I'll have another bash..

Going to the password screen is normal, also in safe mode.

When you get there, then what happens?

Earlier on, before I asked for advice, I got to the system restore by selecting, "repair your computer", it just gives me one date option and I couldn't change it, even when I checked the box to show more dates. That date resulted in a system restore failure notice.

When you say none of the keys work, do you get that box for entering a password? If so, then when you hit a key do you get a black dot in that box everytime you hit a key?

OK. Let's see if this helps. I'm going to ask you to reset the bios to the default settings and here is how:

Restoring default settings in the Setup Utility
The following procedure explains how to restore the Setup Utility default settings. If the Setup Utility is
not already running, begin at step 1. If the Setup Utility is already running, begin at step 2.
1. Open the Setup Utility by turning on or restarting the device, and then pressing f10 while the “F10
= BIOS Setup Options” message is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen.
2. Use the arrow keys to select Exit > Load Setup Defaults, and then press enter.
3. When the Setup Confirmation is displayed, press enter.
4. To save your change and exit the Setup Utility, use the arrow keys to select Exit > Exit Saving
Changes, and then press enter.
The Setup Utility default settings go into effect when the device restarts.
NOTE: Your password, security, and language settings are not changed when you restore the factory
default settings.
Exiting the Setup Utility
You can exit the Setup Utility with or without saving changes.
● To exit the Setup Utility and save your changes from the current session:
If the Setup Utility menus are not visible, press esc to return to the menu display. Then use the
arrow keys to select Exit > Exit Saving Changes, and then press enter.
● To exit the Setup Utility without saving your changes from the current session:
If the Setup Utility menus are not visible, press esc to return to the menu display. Then use the
arrow keys to select Exit > Exit Discarding Changes, and then press enter.
After either choice, the device restarts and loads the operating system.

I have also found this tidbit of info in the HP Mini manual:

Using System Restore
NOTE: System Restore is the recommended option to restore the original operating system.
To restore the original operating system and programs using the System Restore utility that is installed
on the device, follow these steps:
1. Turn on or restart the device, and then press the esc key repeatedly while the “F10 = BIOS Setup
Options” message is displayed in the lower-left corner of the screen.
The “System Restore” page opens.
2. Use the arrow keys to select System Restore, and then press enter.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions to restore the system.

==================================
==================================

Please realize that what HP is calling System Restore is NOT what Microsoft means by the words System Restore.

Are you sure that the mini is running Win 7? I ask because there has been xp with sp3 and Vista also offered for the mini.

Yes, it is definitely running win7. Okay so I hit F10 and it told me to enter the password, so I did and it told me again, so I did and then again and then it said the password is incorrect (It wasn't) and "fatal error."
I think I might give up on this. It's not even my computer:|
Thank you so much for the help:)
