Hi all,

I have an HP Pavilion DV9000 and have been looking to get a new laptop for school next month. I have had this computer since December 2006 and haven't had many problems with. I've heard about all the problems with it and have only experienced the one about the broken hinges so far. I have noticed a drop off in performance recently, fairly big too. Load times slow, picks what programs it wants to install, etc. Anyway, anyone know how long this computer will last? I is almost 4 years old now and don't want to have to get a new one if I can get another year or two out of it.

Thanks!
Matt

I have noticed too that it is running at fairly high temps. More that what it was 1 year ago. Haven't looked at a temp monitor, just by the feel.

Chances are you have quit a bit of dust and dirt inside the computer, especially near the fans. You can use a can of compressed air to blow some of it out, or if you feel comfortable doing it, you could take the laptop apart (some are harder than others) and clean everything out that way. If the computer is getting hot, then the CPU is probably slowing itself down to keep from overheating. Too much dust clogging the fans and being on the heat sinks can definitely cause it to get very hot.

If you do get a new laptop, most people agree the Toshiba laptops are the best right now.

I have done that already, pulling it apart. Pulled it apart down to the motherboard, dusted and cleaned and everything. Helped some but not alot. But as far as the programs not installing, I have tried to reinstall Windows but that didn't help.

Laptops are only expected to last 4-5 years and you may be experiencing some type of hard ware failure. You might want to make sure all the fans are actually running.

Fans are all running. I figured it would be a hardware issue because it was not completing the install and will not update avast! anti-virus or some other applications.

Have you made sure all your drivers are up to date?

Check optional Windows Updates for newer drivers.

Run sfc /scannow to check System File integrity.

Clear hardware by running memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes, then full HD diag/repair CD scan: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

I did all this, it returned no errors, problems, or complaints.

Check the Event Viewer for repeat Errors: google text and number to resolve.

I will look more into this later. I didn't feel like researching anything last night, so I went ahead and ran the other tests instead. I'll post back what I find out.
