Solved I get the DNS server not responding

I couldn't manage to obtain an ethernet cable, could a complete restore of the laptop to initial setup help? I haven't done much on my laptop, it's still new. I think i messed up when i installed windows from recovery disc that comes with it (i wanted to remove all software that comes preloaded ). And will the complete restore roll it back to factory setup?

finally i got it to work. i had to use some proxy address. it seems students are given the proxy address to stop utsiders from using the network. thank you so much kaktussoft, you taught me so much in the process

You told me wired works. So DHCP, DNS etc works fine.
Wireless works as well... you tried another wireless access point. I think you just tried it in same building same problem!

You told me it was open.... no config needed. But you have to setup a proxy you tell me now. Proxy enables inside users to go outside.

Where did you fill in the proxy?

I never knew Proxy was a must, i thought u just plugged in and surf the net but i was wrong. I had to set up proxy in IE9 and Opera and internet access was ok. But i don't know how to setup proxy in cmd, so ping to google doesn't work still. That's why i created the new thread in here

the output of ipconfig was the same in other machines, but i didn't try anything else coz i doubt if anyone could have allowed me on their machine. If i said it worked in other machines then i lied and i'm sure that's why u were not able to get to the problem. I'm sorry about that...and thank u again. And the other thread i put under network and sharing, proxy in cmd, any help?

ftp, nslookup,ping, tracert... no way in cmd!

Set proxy settings in the applications you want to use proxy. Mostly under tools->settings->connection. Select http proxy or web proxy there.

msn messenger, browsers, ftp clients can use the proxy. But also torrent clients can communicatie over http.

Most likely the proxy server only allows http, https, ftp. And maybe only port 80,8080,21. And maybe also blocks disallowed sites. And maybe also blocks exe files.

the network at the university uses a squid proxy at proxy.ku.ac.ke:6060..the proxy is used to filter access to the internet..therefore dns requests are blocked from clients machines. the proxy forwards the request and blocks some websites as per univesity internet policy . ping and nsloookup is blocked hence you cant use the google dns or any other dns service behind the proxy.. if the proxy.ku.ac.ke fails change the proxy to 192.168.3.4 and port 6060....it usually works when dns does not respond. good luck comrades.
