I have upgraded from Windows XP SP3 to Windows 7.

I can't stand it for only one reason. Somebody help me out with this.

If you open photoshop (or any program) and create a new file and save it. Close. Then open the file again and make a change I get the message:

"Could not save "filename" because the file is locked. Use the 'Properties' command in the Windows Explorer to unlock the file."

WHY DOES IT DO THAT? No matter what file I want to edit, I have to first open the application by right clicking on it and choosing "Run as Administrator" I just tried downloading a file from FireFox FTP from my server to overwrite the file on my HD and it won't let me saying I don't have those privileges! WHAT?!?

This is not an improvement....its a Pain in the you know what!

How do I fix this?

Sounds more like adobe, it has ALWAYS keeped files/folders locked after closing. Very irritating trying to eject a usb drive after PS has editted or renaming a folder in XP.
Seems that things are more noticeable in Seven since it follows rules better.
My internet kept breaking in Seven, turned out to be a setting I made in router to block xp-wmp folder.jpg clobber. XP and WMP ignored it, but Seven did as it was told.

Well, thats not ment to happen for a start. i cant tell you why its doing it either.

Are you an Admin?Iv heard doing upgrades from Xp to vista can cause bugs. lots of em, i dont know if the win7 upgrade does the same. If possible id install 7 on a new partition an see how that goes. a lot of the time its easier to start a fresh. Though lets just hope thats your last option ey.
Dont suppose you have messed with permissions have you? Im still new to win7 myself so i aint the best person to ask. i hope others can help you out.

No this is a clean install of W7 I reinstalled all my design software but its the same with all programs...not just adobe.

Forexample, if I wanted to be able to save files I work on, I have to first right click on the application icon and choose, "Run as administrator" then no problems with saving files.

Why do I have to do that? I'm on the only one on this machine...I should be set as administrator reguardless, right?

Where are you saving these files - it sounds as if you have an NTFS permissions issue - your user has save rights but not modify rights in the folder(s) involved
This often occurs if using a separate drive or partition that has been accessed by a previous or dual boot OS.

If you right click on the root of the area concerned and give your actual user full control of these folders using the properties - security tab you should not see this error.

You may have to take ownership of the folders before you can apply the permissions

It's not an adobe issue. It's as Barmman suggested, a permissions issue.

Get rid of Adobe and install Foxit if it is an Adobe issue. But it looks like more than that.

Yes I can save but not modify files. Its like this over my entire storage drive.

When I try to change the permissions on the storage drive, I get errors. I'm ready to say screw this and go back to XP. Its not just an adobe problem. I can't modify anything no matter what application I use if the file is on my storage drive.

You are saving files to an external drive? Format the drive as NTFS once you back up the files on it, and then save the file to your C:\ drive. Copy it across.

This was simply the storage drive (inside the computer) that I used for XP. I just unplugged the drive when installing a clean W7 install. Then plugged it back in and it immediately recognized the drive...but no modify permissions.

Take ownership of the whole drive - Ignore errors on system folders - if you have issues with non system folders you will have to manually take ownership of these areas.

Once you are the owner you will be able to add your user name specifically to the list of users - give this user full control - again any non system drive issues will need to be addressed specifically

I do this on every install I perform of a windows OS using NTFS data partitions and I can assure you it works :)

I use a Magnum.
Simple file sharing is not designed to work with NTFS volumes but with FAT.
To correctly share NTFS partitions you need to use the advanced sharing.

The issue is the same basic NTFS permissions issue - that is because Windows 7 enforces good security practices that were often ignored on XP systems. The basic rules of NTFS permissions have not changed from Windows NT although they were not always used except on Client server network systems
