Since I have Windows 7 Home Premium, the default setting is for the defragment feature to fix up my computer files every week at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Is this a good thing? I just wanted to make sure that my laptop's hard drive would not be too overburdened with doing this on a weekly basis. Please help. Thanks!

Hello Val,

Unless you do a ton of saving and deleting on the hard drive, then usually once a month should be fine. :)

It's good, at least in my opinion. If you only a do it rarely, it'll take longer to defrag each time.
By doing it weekly it's a smaller burden each time, just schedule it to defrag when you're not gonna be using it (work/sleep).

With Windows 7 . Defrag is done automatically by default . If you have an SSD in your laptop or PC. I would disable the feature on that disk .

What is an S.S.D. VistaKing? Sorry I'm not familiar with that term. I just checked this morning and the defrag finished at 11:06 p.m. last night while I was sleeping,
so I will keep the defrag on for the weekly scan. Thank for your help everyone.

SSD is Solid State Drive. They're the new Hard Drives that have no spinning heads . They're more expensive then the other Mechanical hard drives . But they do make your applications and boot much faster to launch.

Wow that is amazing! Do the SSD's come with the new laptops and desktop computers now, or do you have to buy them separately and get them installed by a computer tech person?

Either, most of if not all of us here put theirs in personally. I did. Some newer laptops have them in already but its a simple process to switch them out. A little self confidence and our tutorials to walk you through it should be more than enough. An SSD will change the way you look at your machine.

As far as your original question though, I agree with Brink here. Once a month is fine unless you do an awful lot of downloading and/or deleting etc. The more a regular HDD works i.e. spins, the more wear and tear naturally. For most normal users weekly is overkill. IMHO of course.

Hey! Just noticed your hometown! I worked Coney Island one summer, the old Coney lol. Was a "badge of honor" at one time for old school carnies to put in a summer there. Ate so many Nathans...........

Windows defragmenter does defragment things but does not "optimize". Auslogics Disk Defrag is a great free tool that allows you to "defrag and optimize" making your system a bit faster cuz it first defragments, then consolidates all your data at one place and free space on the other side thus reducing further fragmentation a bit.

As already said, defragging once a month is enough unless you're like me who keeps on adding/deleting data to and from the HDD respectively every now and then. The more you use the shorter the life span, universal truth.

If you have Windows 7 and an SSD, it will automatically recognize it and turn off defragging for that drive.

Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for your help I have most of my files already stored in my dropbox folder so that I don't overwhelm my hard drive with adding/deleting pictures that I have uploaded from my cellphone. I will defrag my system every month instead.

Greetings Indianacarnie,
I enjoyed eating the Nathan's Hog Dogs from Coney Island,
but that is all I remember I was a little girl back than.
