After doing some research on the web, I found that certain ports should be closed to prevent intrusion. I went through the steps of trying to close port 445 from the control panel/system & security/windows firewall/advanced settings/inbound rules/start new rule etc. The problem is when i do a zenmap scan on the router ip address that i use, it still shows the port as being open.

When i close or open a port what address do i scan so that i can physically see that the port is open or closed?
