I need help diagnosing Youtube playback issue

Good morning everyone,

I am having an odd issue wherein when I play Youtube videos i can only play one or two videos and then a yellow dot will appear in the red bar on the video that shows your videos progression and the video(s) will no longer play.

I have to clear cookies/history and restart my PC to be able to watch videos again, (but only one or two and I will have to repeat the same process again).

My flash is up to date and all settings are ok, and no problems with video playback on other sites.

Please see screenshot of yellow spot on playback progression bar.

Any help would be appreciated.

try using internet explorer instead of firefox. does this happen with flash games?

You might remove the youtube browser plugin and test without it by simply navigating to youtube and watching the videos,
On the top right of your screen shot "Tube"

Actually I have two browser plug-ins for YouTube, but i will remove them and see what happens and report back .

OK, I disabled the plug ins and still have the same issue, only one video will play then I must clear and restart to continue viewing videos.

Do you have any ad blocking plugins on FF? They could cause this. The yellow dot tells you there's an ad inserted in this video, see the screenshots below for the explanation.

Wow, thats very interesting!

In fact most videos today have ad's of some kind, but I dont have any blocking software installed, (to my knowledge).

When I am watching videos what happens is:

1) first video fine, the second (or third) video will work till it hits the yellow dot then it stops playing (loading??)

2) then the next video wont even load, all I get is a black (and blank) video.


...then dump cookies with ff tools and CCleaner and restart PC.

OK. In my opinion this was the most logical explanation as it according to you always happens when it's time for Youtube to present that ad at the bottom. As you can easily confirm yourself, the yellow dot really means what I said it to mean; videos that have that small ad at bottom all have this marker to show the time spot when it is presented, and accordingly videos which do not have the yellow dot do not present these ads.

I do not use Firefox myself but I have heard about similar issues with some of the FF ad blocking plugins.

Next thing to try is to increase Youtube's buffer size. Right click a Youtube video, select Settings:

Select the Folder tab, set buffer to Unlimited, click Close to save settings:

Close and restart FF.

you should use another browser for now then. I reccomend you use a browser OTHER than IE since you woud need to get the ie version. actually doesn't matter if you download flash for ie or another browser now I actually recommend just getting the ie version

Well, over the last month I did find however that this problem manifests itself with any and every video source, whether a video on a news site, video content on any website and of course YouTube. I have to clear my history, cookies, use my Ccleaner, then go to internet options and clear them there also. Then restart my PC and then there is no problem with videos any where- for a while, then...

I should state any video file on my HDD or any DVD disk plays fine and never a problem here, only streaming video. And my settings are set for the optimum playback as Kari recommends.

PS- the beta v12 of flash helped quite a bit, but soon the problem returned.
